Nest wiring and setup for dual fuel (AC/Heat Pump & Oil)

Hi,
I'm looking for help on how to wire & setup a duel fuel system properly on the Nest Learning Thermostat(Gen3) with my new AC/Heat pump system and existing oil burner. I have read through many of the comments on this site and watched many videos, but I'm still not 100% on how this will work.

Systems
-Durastar (Rheem) AC/Heat pump  (DRAH2TA3617ASTNNJ/DRHP15A30BJ1NA)
-Oil heat burner

I want to run on Heat pump until 40deg, then switch to oil burner

This is the current wiring:
Y1= Yellow  (Directly from Rheem)
Y2=N/A
G=Green    (Directly from Rheem)
OB=Blue     (Directly from Rheem) (He said Nest must be set to use B)
Rc=Red       (Directly from Rheem)

W1=White  (Directly from oil burner)
C=Brown    (Directly from oil burner)
RH=Red       (Directly from oil burner)

With this configuration, I don't see how I can setup the dual fuel system.  I was thinking the OB would move to W2 as the AUX, but I'm not really sure.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Just to be clear, the new system is one unit with AC & Heat pump combined. The P/Ns I provided above are:
DRAH2TA3617ASTNNJ - Air Handler
DRHP15A30BJ1NA  - Compressor

Hello kkiteboy,

Thanks for reaching out! I'd be happy to take a look into this for you.

Setting up a dual-fuel system with the Nest Learning Thermostat can be a bit complex, especially when integrating both a heat pump and an oil burner. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you wire and set up your system properly:

  • In a dual-fuel setup, the Nest Thermostat will switch between the heat pump and the oil burner based on outdoor temperatures. Typically, the heat pump is used for milder temperatures, and the oil burner kicks in when it gets colder.
  • Ensure that your Nest Thermostat is compatible with your heat pump and oil burner. Since you're using a Nest Learning Thermostat, it should support dual fuel systems.
  • Once everything is wired and configured, it's essential to test the system to ensure proper functionality. You can do this by adjusting the temperature settings and observing when the system switches between the heat pump and the oil burner.

Also, can you share with us your old thermostat's wiring setup? I'll look forward to your response.

Best regards,
Mark
