My nest cool was set to 78. Nest current temperature showed 79 however it didn’t trigger the AC on. Is that normal? Other thermostats certainly trigger AC on immediately after the temperature drops below the set cooling.

I have noticed that there seems to be multiple steps between each degree and my Nest doesn't necessarilly trigger at the initial jump to the next temp, either above or below. It's almost like the thermostat, when set to 72°, sees 72°, 72.25°, 72.5° and 77.75° and doesn't trigger until 72.5° before kicking the cooling side on. That's just my annecodotal response to non-scientific observations as I noticed the same thing when initially setting my Nest up.

My Nest doesn’t respond until after 2 degrees have gone up. For example cool to set 77. It shows current temperature as 79 on the iPhone app but it won’t trigger the cooling fan.

Hi folks,
Thanks for reaching out. It’s normal for your home’s temperature to vary slightly (typically one or two degrees) above or below the temperature set on your thermostat for a short while. This is often due to the built-in delay for turning on your system. This delay is commonly called the maintenance band, deadband, differential, or temperature swing. The delay is usually just a few minutes, but it’s to prevent unnecessary wear on your system and help save energy.
Thanks,
Edward

Hi Edward
How can we adjust the maintenance band/temperature swing?
2 degrees, on either side has a significant impact on comfort and maintaining room temperature balance.

Hi MRjimo,
Thanks for getting back to us. When was the last time this worked accurately? What troubleshooting steps have you tried so far?
Best,
Mel

Hi Mel,
This is mostly a winter problem as we don't use AC often.
I looked for troubleshooting steps but could not find any. The problem is the furnace doesn't kick in until the temperature drops below the setting by 1-2 degrees and doesn't turn off until it exceeds the setting by 1-2 degrees.
This is a huge, and uncomfortable, swing in temperature. The furnace will also run for 60-90 min non-stop during the heating process.
We have a Nest Sensor on the upper floor to help regulate the temperature in the main living space, however the problem persists whether we use it or not.
The furnace and house is only 5 years old, we have lived here for two.
Is there a setting to manage cycle time? Is there a setting for temperature increments?
