Hello, I am currently renovating my home and installing a heat pump. I already have a gas furnace installed. I went out and bought the Nest thermostat and when I provided it to the HVAC installer he said that Nest doesn't work well with dual fuel sources and that he's installed a ton in the past and its given every home owner issues. He insists on getting the Ecobee pro. The big issue is that he said to pair both of them on the same system, never seems to work well. Id rather have the Nest but if the professional is telling me it doesn't work I'm hesitant to go with it. Anybody else have this issue and had it resolved?

Hi Dave231,
Thanks for posting here in the Community forum and for showing interest in our Nest Thermostats. Nest Thermostats do have support for dual fuel systems, but there are some considerations and limitations to be aware of. Dual fuel systems typically consist of a heat pump and a backup heating source, such as a gas furnace. The Nest Thermostats can be configured to work with these systems, but it's important to ensure proper compatibility and setup for optimal performance.
When using a Nest Thermostat with a dual fuel system, it is essential to ensure compatibility with the specific model. What is the make and model of your system and thermostat? And could you send us a wiring photo of your current thermostat so we can take a closer look? Proper wiring and configuration are crucial for the thermostat to work correctly, as it may require specific wiring connections and settings adjustments. The Nest thermostat offers a feature called Heat Pump Balance, which optimizes the performance of the heat pump and backup heat source in dual fuel systems. Properly configuring the Heat Pump Balance settings can maximize energy efficiency and comfort.
Let us know if that helps.
Best,
Zoe

Hi there,
Thanks for getting back to us, and I'm sorry for the late response. If you haven't install any Nest Thermostat, you could send us the wiring photo of the current thermostat you're using. From that, we'll be able to check the corresponding wires' compatibility to our Nest Thermostat.

Hi Zoe, I currently dont have any thermostat installed, so I could theoretically put in any wire that's required and works best for the Nest. Any suggestions?
