We have had a new system boiler installed, with a mega flow hot water tank.
I’m looking to replace the old controller and 2 thermostats with a nest system.
What is the best option for this, we currently have an upstairs thermostat, separate programmer and a downstairs thermostat.
Do I need two learning thermostats, or just one, (doubling as a programmer), and a regular one in the other zone.

Hi there, @paul_round
Thanks for reaching out. For zoned heating, it is required that each zone shall have one thermostat and one Heat Link. One of them will need to be wired to the hot water tank and have a double role. For the one controlling the hot water as well as the heating, the only one able to do that is the 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostat, and for the zone with the heating only control can either be a Learning Thermostat or a Nest Thermostat E.
Let me know if you have more questions.

So do I need 2 3rd gen learning thermostats?

The 2nd generation Nest Learning Thermostat is no longer produced since 2018. The only one produced for both heating and hot water is the 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostat.

Sorry, I think you misunderstood, do I need a gen 3 thermostat in both zones?

You need a 3rd generation thermostat in the zone with the hot water as that is the only one controlling both hot water and heating. For the heating only controlling zone you can get either a 3rd gen or a Nest Thermostat E.
