I just installed my nest learning thermostat. For now I like the keep my house at 21 degrees celsius all the time. Since installing the thermostat the house has seemed to remain this temperature. I keep getting warnings from the thermostat and on my google pixel that my furnace keeps shutting off within 15 mins of turning on. Isn't this normal ? Should I be disregarding this message ? Thank you !

Hello Nrod9,

Congratulations on installing your Nest Learning Thermostat! It's great that you're enjoying the consistent temperature in your house at 21 degrees Celsius. However, it's essential to pay attention to the warnings you're receiving about your furnace shutting off within 15 minutes of turning on.

While it's not uncommon for furnaces to cycle on and off as they maintain the desired temperature, repeated short cycles could indicate an issue. It's advisable not to disregard these warnings, as they may signal potential problems with your heating system. Short cycling can lead to increased energy consumption, higher bills, and even premature wear on your furnace.

Here are a few things you might want to consider:

  • Check Air Filters: Dirty or clogged air filters can impede airflow, leading to overheating and causing the furnace to shut off. Ensure your filters are clean, and replace them if necessary.
  • Check whether the thermostat is set to automatically adjust temperatures when home members leave and come home (for example, switching to Eco temperatures when the home is set to Away).
  • Check whether Auto-Schedule is enabled on the thermostat. Auto-Schedule lets the thermostat learn from manual changes to the temperature and make automatic adjustments to the temperature schedule.
  • Gather the power readings in the Technical Info settings and check for any wiring reports or message codes in the Equipment settings.
  • Double-check that all wires are at the correct terminals. Share with us a photo of your old thermostat and Nest Thermostat's wiring set up.

Let us know how it goes.

Regards,
