No heat - extra wire

Checked compatibility prior to purchase of Nest Thermostat. Switching over from Honeywell and I have the brown and white wire in the same port (white port). Can’t put both wires in same port upon switching to Neat. Started with brown wire in o/b -no heat. Switched white to o/b - no heat. Used the settings to switch from o/b and visa versa with no change in temp. Too chilly to not have heat so reinstalled the Honeywell, both white and brown in same slot, and we have heat again. Where do I put the white and brown wires to get heat? Would hate to bother a professional for such a simple thing unless it’s necessary.

Hi HolliD,

Thanks for reaching out. I'd love to know more about this. Could you share a photo of your current thermostat's wiring?

Best,
Mel

Hi! I figured it out. The brown was for the fan and the blue was wrapped around the outside of the wiring. I call my house the “handyman special” as the previous owners did bare minimum cosmetics to make it sellable and everything has fallen apart over the past year since we moved in. As for the Nest, I had to reset the system in order for it to sync with each other.
