RUUD 4 ton heat pump taken off line for parts order. Aux heat worked for 12 hours, but then only cold air from the ducts. Called repair to get emer/aux heat operating (parts on order for heat pump) . He had to reconfigure my HEST learning thermostat to tell it I had a gas furnace. Then aux heat worked normally. Why is this?

Hi VPI67,
Uh-oh! The reconfiguration of your Nest Learning Thermostat to recognize a gas furnace instead of a heat pump was likely necessary because of the temporary situation where your heat pump was taken offline for parts order. The Nest Learning Thermostat is designed to work with various heating and cooling systems, including heat pumps, which provide both heating and cooling. To optimize the operation of the heat pump, the thermostat needs to be configured. In a situation where the heat pump is temporarily offline, the gas furnace becomes the primary heating source, and the thermostat needs to be configured accordingly. The configuration changes may involve adjusting the thermostat's settings and controls to accommodate the gas furnace, such as wiring, thermostat software settings, or system mode selection to activate the auxiliary/emergency heat function.
By reconfiguring the thermostat to recognize the gas furnace, the HVAC technician was able to ensure that the auxiliary heat (or emergency heat) functioned properly, providing warm air through the ducts while the heat pump was unavailable. Once the parts for your heat pump arrive and it is repaired, you may need to revert the thermostat configuration back to the heat pump setting to optimize its performance and efficiency.
Let us know if that helps.
Best,
Zoe
