Remove old Nest Learning thermostat

PetH

I need to completely remove my Nest learning thermostat. No problem pulling it off the base but I can't figure out how to detach the wires. I've watched a couple of YouTube videos but the base looks very different than mine, probably because it's a pretty old model.

Here's a link to a photo of the base, any help much appreciated.

Hi PetH,

Thanks for posting and for sharing a link for the photo.

You could use needle-nose pliers to pull out the wires. You may need to pull hard as the wires may be stuck on the terminals.

Keep us posted.

Best,

Mel

I tried replying to the email I received from you but it was returned with an unknown email address error.

I haven't had a chance to try using needle nose pliers to remove the wires yet.  To be honest, I was hoping that someone would know that there is a way to remove the wires without resorting to forcing it or even cutting the wires.  Looking at videos of installing more recent generations of the learning thermostat, they all have some sort of lever to press to insert the wires into the connection points  and pressing the lever again releases them but I have not been able to find anything like that on this model.

Hello PetH,

I understand that you wouldn't like to cut the wires. But I wanted to see if you had a chance to remove the wires from your Nest Thermostat. Please try pushing down the tabs while pulling out the wires. Also, you could try uninstalling its base first from the wall and trying to push the tabs and then pull out the wires.

Please let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Mark
