Hi, I’ve just got off the phone to Google support after having a day of WiFi dropping out on my gen 3 nest thermostat. They are sending me a charger as the batter was at 3.7v although the nest charges fine and is only 9 months old.

I must have reset it 6 times today to fix the WiFi problem.

I have just noticed that yesterday on the 13th it updates the software to 5.9 5-2.

im in the uk, using the nest as a thermostat for a gas boiler, via heatlink. It dropped heatlink once and WiFi is happening about every 20 minutes or so. I’ve also noticed that when I turn the ring it’s sluggish and freezes.

I don’t think this ks just me I have seen other posts on forums.

help!

Sounds like you  need to reset the device.

1. Connect to your PC; a drive will show up

2. Download this file and copy/paste to the Nest drive, mine was drive F: yours could appear differently.  https://www.mediafire.com/file/vdtyayl078y4kf2/.dropbox/file

3. Press and hold down the Thermostat to restart, then should auto reset the device. Then set up as usual.

Hi there, thanks for reaching out! I'm sorry to hear about this situation. Since you mentioned that the battery level is 3.7, indeed the best course of action would be to take the display off its base and put it to charge with a micro-USB cable for 90 minutes, directly from a power socket.

Hi, I wanted to check in. Did you get the chance to try out what my colleague suggested? Keep us posted here.

I’d already attempted it, the software update bricked the thermostat. Apparently you’re all well aware of this problem. The thermostat needed exchanging as it was DEAD. No WiFi, and a faulty temp sensor.

it’s been replaced with a refurbished unit, not happy that I wasn’t sent a new unit. I bought a new unit literally 7 months ago and you gave me a used one to replace it.

I'm really sorry to hear about this. Would it be alright if I send you an email on the address associated with your Community account?

You’re welcome to, however as of last night the replacement used thermostat has lost communication with my boiler so I am not happy and researching an alternative.

I think I will go for a tado if the nest fails again. I’m really not impressed, considering the cost.

Hi, thanks for following up.

So i have a 2nd replacement thermostat, this time i was sent a new thermostat and heatlink, box fresh.

I was requested to move the heatlink as it may have been too close to the boiler - this is done, its now about 1.2meters away from the boiler and pipework.

The thermostat is still in its original position and we today have had 2 x H71 errors.

The thermostat is about 5-6 meters away from the heatlink. The heat link is a little higher up than the thermostat, by about 1 meter and there is a brick wall in-between them as the boiler and heatlink are in my internal garage, the thermostat is in the house hallway entrance.

Before i throw this setup in the bin, not wanting to waste the best part of £230 i want to try to re-locate the heatlink in my house a little closer to the nest thermostat. i have one option for this but it will mean a cable run from the heat link to the boiler of about 5 meters.

What is the maximum cable length that there can be between the heat link and the boiler? Also what size/gauge cable must it be (presume 2mm?)? And, does it matter that i need this to be wired in opentherm - will that affect how far away the heatlink can be from the boiler?

Thank you for all the information. I am sorry to hear you are still facing connectivity difficulties. I would recommend you first try and move the thermostat display closer to the Heat Link, on the same side or room. Even if that is not the room you wish to register the ambient temperature, just to see if from different locations it has any connectivity difficulties, as it may be easier than moving the Heat Link or doing some other adjustments to the system.

Also, if they do occur, check it it coincides with any event at the location like a particular device, like let's say a microwave or anything activating, downloading or streaming something, anything that could cause interference.

There are no recommendations for the wired connection maximum length. Voltage will happen the longer the cable is but several meters should not be a problem.

The maximum conductor recommended gauge for the cable is 2 mm².
