Asking on behalf of my parents, who recently purchased a Google Nest Thermostat to replace their old system. However, it seems they need a 20-30V step-down transformer, as the wiring was made for their old thermostat and doesn't seem to be compatible. They asked me if I could research a way to make it work, but I'm not sure where to start.

Hello AxelMark1,
Thanks for reaching out! It's great that your parents are upgrading to a Google Nest Thermostat. Adapting the wiring can be a bit tricky, but there are solutions available. The first step is to identify if their current HVAC system is compatible with the Nest Thermostat.
If the wiring is not compatible, you might need to install a 24V AC step-down transformer. It's important to ensure that the transformer is compatible with your parents' HVAC system. Here's a basic guide to help you get started:
Check the existing thermostat's wiring to understand how it's configured. Take note of the wires and their corresponding labels (e.g., R, Y, G, and W).
If the process seems a bit daunting or if you're unsure about the installation, it's advisable to consult with a professional HVAC technician. They can ensure a safe and proper installation. Let me know if you have more questions.
Best regards,
Mark
