Thermostat Difference and Update Support

I am based in the UK. A consumer support orgaonsiation Which? has recently reported that many smart products lack ongoing support and updates which can leave them vulnerable or non-functioning soon after purchase. I was looking at buying a Nest 3rd Gen thermostat and noted that Google will continue support for 5 years minimum since first release in the US.

That page indicates that the Nest Thermostat was released in 2020 but does not state which thermostat this refers to. Does anyone know what product this refers to? The 3rd Generation product came out in 2015 so this would imply that support for this could end at any point which makes buying it a bit of a gamble. Is the 2020 product the Nest G4CVZ and if so what is the difference between the two (the Nest 3 seems the more expensive in the UK).

Thanks.

Hi there!

Thanks for reaching out. The 3rd generation thermostat and the 2020 version are different. The former has a European and a North American version while the latter is released only in the North American region. The article you linked states that the devices will receive security updates for at least 5 years, it doesn't indicate a maximum period of time nor does it refer to the overall support such as Customer Service Technical Assistance.

Apart from the 2020 version not being available in Europe, there are also different voltage and heating systems, so the 3rd generation one is designed differently for each region. You can find more details here: EU NLT 3rd gen overview, NA thermostats overview. I hope, I clarified the differences. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks in advance, Oana.

Thanks for sharing the difference. Do you know how much longer updates and support are likely to be given to the 3rd Gen Nest Thermostat products? Google asserts a minimum of 5 years from the US release dates for them, but we are already 8 years on from the release of the 3rd Gen Nest Thermostat release and I am concerned that I might buy one only to find support dries up in the next few months.

Thanks, Peter

Thanks for clarifying your concern. The dates there are a minimum of years. You can check the software updates history here. At the moment, we don't have any information to share about the support interruption. For any potential update on this, please follow our official public channels.
