Thermostats Offline and Battery Drained

Mark3288

I have had my nest learning thermostats for several years and have had no issues up until recently this past summer.  It is going offline and shows a low battery message.  I removed the unit and charged via a USB but this is only a temporary fix as the batteries continue to drain and only last  a few hours before having to be disconnected and recharged again this would happen when the AC cooling mode was turned on.   During cooling season, the power is getting to the thermostat, but the battery drains faster that it charges.

More recently both my thermostats for heating went offline and battery drained while I was on vacation.   This lead to one of my pipes freezing and bursting.  Wiring has not changed, nor has the AC unit or heating boiler.    I never had any issues with the heating until last week.

Something has changed with the Nest Thermostat recently which is causing this.    I would prefer to keep the Nest thermostats, but they simply are not working properly.   Any help would be greatly appreciated?

Hi @Mark3288,

Thank you for reaching out to our support community! I'm truly sorry for the inconvenience you experienced with the Nest Learning Thermostat's battery and the trouble it caused during your vacation. I'm here to help!

To better understand the situation, I'd like to ask you a few questions about your system.

  • What is the make and model of your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment?
  • Is the thermostat's display seated properly?
  • Are all the wires of your thermostat seated firmly in its terminals (with no loose or exposed wires)?
  • Is there a wiring report or error message on your thermostat and/or app?
  • What are the power readings in Settings > then Technical Info > then Power?

Visit our Help Center to learn more about Troubleshoot when your thermostat won’t turn on.

Please feel free to share any additional details you think might be relevant.

Best regards,

Eduardo
