I get this error whether I try to connect via Google Home or Nest. Nest actually takes me to Google Home. Everything in my house is connected to Google Home and Assistant but both thermostats give same error from QR or the code.

Let's double check what model of thermostat you have:

Most models are setup in the Google Nest app, whereas the newest thermostat (2020) can only be setup in the Google Home app.

I have the newest model. I just purchased. This is a known error loop that people are tied up in. When the Nest Google Home migration occurred.

Did you try closing both the Nest app and Home app, then start setup in the Home app first? Similar issue was reported here and was resolved?
