White wire option?

I have a heat pump in North Carolina and I have the nest 3rd generation thermostat. It's my understanding that the white wire is for aux heat and can be put into either the W1 or W2 position. I don't want the aux heat to come on at all so I've disconnected the white wire. After I did this I tested the system to make sure it still produced heat and it does. My question is - will disconnecting the white wire hurt my system?

Not connecting the white wire, if that is indeed the one for Aux heat, should not hurt your system, your heat pump will just be your only source of heat.
