Wiring Issues with Dual Fuel

Any help will be appreciated in getting the Nest set up correctly.  I swapped out my Trane thermostat for a Nest Learning Thermostat and not 100% sure that it was wired correctly and if the Nest is setup correct.  The Trane thermostat had wires going to R, O, Y, G, B, F, X2, W1, S1, and S2. I taped out F, S1, and S2.  I put X2 on * connector and W1 on W1.  It shows primary as electric and alternate as gas and I have the outside unit set to come on if the temp is above 40. I saw elsewhere that W1 should go to W2 (aux heat)?  Any help would be much appreciated.

It might be ok on W1 but if it's not working correctly switch it to W2/aux.

Right now it appears to be working but I was still curious if the X2 is emergency heat or other because I think it looked like W1 and W2 were wired together at the gas furnace. When I found the thermostat manual, it showed X2 going to W2 for a 3H/2C config so I wound up moving it.

Hello there,

I wanted to stop by and see how I could help.

Thanks for helping here, @Houptee.

@electronlove, I'm glad to hear that it's been working, and I understand that wiring can be confusing. Usually, X terminals are intended for emergency heat. To be sure, could you share with us a photo of your previous and current thermostat wiring? Also, do you have an emergency heat?

I'll look forward to your response.

Regards,

Mark

  • Hi. It's been working for the most part. The behavior seems a bit different though and the blower may be a less than before. I did move X2 based on a schematic that I saw which had W1 and W2 wired together. I'm sharing a Google drive folder Nest Wiring

Hello electronlove,

Sounds great! Thanks for sharing the photos. Big help! It appears to be on the second stage of heating, also for auxiliary heat. At this time, it would be better to keep observing, as your thermostat will still re-calibrate after the changes. But I wanted to make sure everything was covered here; let me know if you have more questions or concerns.

Regards,

Mark
