Replaced Honeywell Thermostat with following 6 wires (Color of wire and letter on thermostat)-- Red -R, Jumper wire to RC, Orange to O/B, Yellow to Y, Green to G, Black to C, White to E/AUX.
System ran correctly in cool mode. My question is regarding the White wire. Originally I connected white to nest "W2/Aux" but I did not have emergency heat as an option (running gas furnace in lieu of heat pump). (And yes I realize the electricity vs gas consumption and costs, etc. etc.) I just switched white wire to the "*" on the nest and was able to switch to emergency heat. I assume this is the correct wiring? Also is auxiliary heat an electric heat source at the heat pump for when it gets exceptionally cold? My system is older and I cannot see that any such heat coils are located outside in or around the heat pump (Ive opened it up various times). I've read various references to auxiliary heat as helping bring the heat pump up to temperature and some refer to auxiliary heat as when the gas furnace has to kick on when the heat pump is unable to draw heat from extreme cold outside. Thanks in advance.
UPDATE- I realized that white to "W2/Aux" is correct. Its just not called "emergency heat" in this wiring, its called alternative heat on the thermostat. In order to bypass the heat pump and run the gas furnace whenever you want you need to set the thermostat alt heat setting to "always". This is in the settings where you set the temperature for Alt heat, just keep raising the temperature setting until you see "always". This video shows a couple ways to get same result: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vytzbuDho6s

Post a picture of the current thermostat wiring.
