brand new AC and gas furnace installed. Gas not coming on now during cold days

Hello, I had my AC unit fail during the heat of summer, I got a brand new ac installed, along with gas furnace. during the hot, hot Texas summer, I did not care much of the heater not working but here i am. Days and nights are much cooler but manageable. However, it will start getting colder. So, now my attention is on how to make the heater work. I go to my google home, go to thermostat tap on that, i tap on settings, tap on thermostat, tap on heat configuration and see heat delivery- forced air, in-floor radiant, radiators. I don't have any of those.

The one that is grayed out Heat fuel source which asks what is my heat fuel source- gas, electric, oil, propane.  i need to tap on gas but it is grayed out, can't select it.

Help?

If you do not have an air handler with a Gas Furnace, how does the heat get distributed in your home?

If you can break your comment down for us simple folks.  Air handler?

But even that,  on my Google home app, the part heat fuel source on the app is grayed out. If it was not, I could switch to gas..

If you don't mind me asking. Do you have O/B wire on your thermostat? Because if you do. You can click this link and follow the steps you see from there: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9257086?hl=en#zippy=%2Cchange-the-ob-wire-settings

or you can also check this link if you don't have O/B wire: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9235232?hl=en

You have a c - wire though, that's strange. Have you tried fixing the wires like straightening them, then do you see any error message from your thermostat? Like no power detected from R or Y1 etc.

I ran it through the summer with no problem, no error messages. Even when I set heat (of course no heat) don't get errors..

rtrev4,

I am an HVAC company owner, I have access to several thousand installation and operation manuals for systems.  To best help you, I need your Make and model numbers of the indoor furnace and the outdoor condenser unit.
Let us run a check.  Turn the power to the furnace off, remove the nest front face, then unplug the R red wire and the W white wire.  Connect them to each other, and then turn the power back on.  After a few minutes your heating system should come on.

R to G turn on the Blower Fan

R to Y turns on the Air Conditioner

I connected the red and white, the furnace DID come in. Now what?

Still hoping to get a response bout what to do next. I connected the red and white as suggested, the furnace did come on after I flipped the switch back on but I turned the switch back off, the smart thermostat face is not on. What do I do with red and white wired still wired together?

With that test, We know that the thermostat wires are connected and working.  The problem you are having is two for, 1. Your thermostat is not configured properly. You have a Forced Air system with Gas fuel.  Now the term air handler refers to a forced air system.  There is a return duct and a supply duct and a blower fan that circulates the air.

Thanks for the reply. So it's just configuration? I can reconnect the wires back where they belong to thermostat. On my Google home app, I see I have forced air, I also see the fuel source which has gas is grayed out, so I can't select it. .

Hello Google home app? Can you all help me in configuring  my thermostat?

You need to make the changes on the Thermostat itself.  Go to Menu, select, rotate ring to equipment, select, the thermostat will show you a picture of the backplate with the wires it detects. Your will look different since this picture is a 3rd generation thermostat back plate. Just Make sure all 5 wires show up as detected

Then select CONTINUE, The thermostat now shows your system and you should see HEATING COOLING and FAN, press CONTINUE,  now it  switches to equipment settings, rotate ring to HEAT TYPE, select, rotate ring to GAS select, then it switches to TYPE, rotate ring the FORCED AIR and select,  then select DONE.  Now, let’s test it.

Select EQUIPMENT again, once again the backplate picture show up, shows the wires detected.  Select CONTINUE, and now select TEST, and test the HEAT to test.

Did it work this time?

I do not know that first generation nest thermostat so I don’t know if it’s saying that the blue wires are not detected and the gray one is not in use, or watt. On the third generation and software what it does is show you which wires are connected in their colors and it learned the colors of the wires technically when we did the online configuration tool. That is neither here nor there, at this point I really wish you can do a factory reset on your thermostat, and start over.
The wires of your old thermostat and their colors are as follows

R is red

Y is Yellow

C is Blue

G is green

W is White.
when you go through the set up again,  choose forced air system, gas heat.

I tried it, it took a while to heat up but I felt heat. It was very warm outside when I tried it but now a cold front came through today, I will try it again here soon but I'm confident it will work. Thank you for your help..

So what is blue? Should I connect it to O/B?

CoolingWizard

No, the Blue is the Common wire, you do not have a Heat Pump so no need for O/B. The O/B wire is for control of a heat pump reversing valve. Let’s go ahead and make this thing clear for me, go outside with your smart phone take a picture of the manufacture label that shows the model number and serial number of the outdoor unit. Let’s put this to bed once and for all. Then go inside to your air handler and do the same thing post both pictures here please.
