error e298 despite correct wiring and 24 volts present

a year ago i purchased the "nest" model and had the no power error upon installation. i am an hvac technicion and exchanged the defective product at home depot. the new one has worked fine but recently the proximaty sensor quit working and the screen sensor takes more touching to work but i get around that. today i hooked up a brand new same model for a friend and it was locked on "go to google app to proceed" etc. it also said no 24 volt despite 25 volts on the correct terminals, and wiring not compatable despite the wiring being the most basic (r,w,y,c, and g. I came home and removed my nest to swap it out for testing but  mine locked on "no power error 298" as soon as i removed it and reinstalling it, removing/installing batteries  (yes they are good) will not clear the error code! will an upgrade fix this and if so how do i do that?? if not is there a recall program out there as i am now 3 for 3 with defective nests???  i see there are bug fixes in here but will that address the problem?..thanks

I had the same issue earlier this week. I had an electrician bring in power with a C wire, but the Nest doesn’t recognize it. I had a second one to install in a different area of my house and tried to use that one, but it had the same problem. So, I’m 2-for-2 with defective units. (We’re up to 5 now, including the original post.) I’ve given up and ordered two Nest Learning Thermostats and I’m hoping those will work. ☹️
