Hi rebeccamigliori,
Thank you for reaching out to the community. I'm sorry to hear that your Nest thermostat is showing the error message "E298." I'd be happy to help!
Since you're encountering Error E298, I believe you have a Nest Thermostat 2020. Could you please confirm the model of your thermostat and share a photo of your wiring installation? Additionally, I'd like to ask the following:
- What type of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system do you have?
- Have you used your AC unit recently? Frequent AC use during hot weather can cause the drip pan to fill with water or the drain tubes to clog. This can lead to the AC or heat pump shutting off to prevent water overflow.
- Do you have a common wired or Nest power connector installed in your HVAC system?
- When did you install the thermostat?
In the meantime, you can try the following:
- Replace the batteries to regain control of your system while troubleshooting.
- Check the air filter. The HVAC system needs good airflow to work properly. A clogged air filter can restrict airflow over the cooling coils, which can cause them to freeze and shut down the system.
- Try removing each wire one by one and cleaning them with a paper towel. Sometimes the thermostat base is unable to detect the wires if they have dust. After that, if the thermostat turns back on, perform a factory reset and set it up in the Google Home app. Important: Before touching any wires, turn off the power to your HVAC system at the breaker box.
Please keep me posted.
Best regards,
Jenniffer
