set my thermostat to automatically go below 50

I would like to set my thermostat downstairs(no one sleeps there) to automatically go below 50 for a period of time at night, on the schedule. So my heater does not run constantly. Honeywell thermostat heat temperature can go down to 40 for schedule. It is very convenient.

Same question here ... why does Google Home not let me set the Nest Thermostat below 50 F for heating?

Hi folks,

@pzelten, Nest Thermostats have a default lower limit of 50 degrees Fahrenheit for heating, set to prevent extreme temperature drops that could lead to freezing pipes or other issues. This safety feature is designed to protect your home and its occupants. The specific temperature limits may vary depending on the model and region. Nest Thermostats generally have a minimum limit of 50 degrees Fahrenheit, a design choice made by Nest, a subsidiary of Google, to ensure safe and reliable heating system operation.

Let us know if that helps.

Zoe

Hi Zoe,

Thanks - but please let the Nest/Google folks know that 50 is a very high and ‘paternalistic’ limit, and I have seen lots of customers complaining about it.  There are quite legitimate reasons for allowing lower … especially in the case of an overnight with forced hot air, or for a garage or other space without pipes.

They DO allow lower temps, but only under ‘eco’ as far as I can tell ( thank you reddit )

Consider that prior to these restrictive features, those ‘foolish incompetents’ which google/nest is apparently trying to ‘protect’ had mercury switch or Honeywell thermostats that let them set it as low as they wanted.

The minimum safety feature is a good one, but it is notably  programmable!

The 50 F may in fact be a good 'default' lower limit, but restricting the user from over-riding it is an unnecessary and frustrating 'feature'.

Please help to feed back our displeasure.
