Hi,
I have connected a mesh router to my ISP modem/router and have two pods acting as access points.
Everything seems to be working great.
But, I do have a double NAT situation. Confirmed by doing a tracert to an external site. I have not seen any issues due to this (yet) and things seem to be ok, but I would like to get the configuration as close to perfect as possible.
The ISP has stated that the modem cannot be placed in bridge mode because we have dynamic IP (i.e. the IP changes from time to time). Is there any validity to this? There is also a language barrier here for me, but I did my best to try to understand what he was saying.
If it is valid that you cannot put a modem into bridge mode if you have a dynamic IP, are there any alternative ways to deal with a double NAT scenario? I know you can put the Google mesh system into bridge mode instead but only if you use a single pod. I need three.
How can we configure this correctly if we need multiple pods and have a dynamic IP / can't put the modem in bridge mode?

Hi @dhruv22
I don't think having a dynamic IP should conflict in a Bridge mode.
What kind of modem/router did you get?

I'm visiting someone in India who is not tech savvy. I want to get it to the best possible config I can before I go home. even though it works well, I believe the double NAT may be a problem down the road.
The modem is called "xtreme fiber".
ISP says bridge mode is not possible due to dynamic IP.. I can't change it myself because they somehow lock it down so only they can make changes. I also don't want to put it in bridge mode and lock myself out (if I could make changes).

Hey dhruv22,
Is there anything that is not functioning with the current setup? I understand why you would want to leave it as bulletproof as possible, but I'm curious if you're seeing any problems or not already at this point.
Thanks,
Jeff

No, no problems yet. Everything works great. But as stated numerous times by both of us, I'd like to configure it correctly before I leave for home. Double NAT seems like a bad idea.

Hey dhruv22,
Apologies for the long time without a check in here. I realize you were working on a time frame, but I wanted to check in and see if you were able to get things configured before you left and I wanted to see if everything continued to work for you afterwards.
Thanks,
Jeff

Well.. double nat is still there but no issues due to it so far.. that doesn't mean they won't arise

Thanks for the update, dhruv22.
While it's never recommended to run a double NAT, there is a lot to be said about a working setup, especially if it's stable. We have seen some other users do fine in a similar setup, I just worry about problems down the line. As things are working right now, let's mark this as resolved, but I would urge you to open a new thread up if anything happens for the worse. A new thread could bring some fresh eyes to the question if we need more troubleshooting efforts.
I'll leave the thread open for another day in case you have any questions.
Thanks,
Jeff

You can close it now.. I set it up for someone overseas.. if something happens there isn't much I can do anyway!

Sounds good, dhruv22.
I wish we had a more solid answer for you, but I appreciate the follow up and patience.
Thanks,
Jeff
