I've been working on a few things with my nest app, and it's too anemic. The entire reason I began using google products was the lack of the patronizing workflow. I use android because I can install a terminal emulator, ping an ip address, do a traceroute, check my ip address, check DNS, do a DNS lookup, and even get the time at NIST.
The interface for the networking is garbage for people who know what they are doing. I'm sorry for the harsh criticism, but it's next to useless. Please let us ping an ip address, from the router, on a command line running on the router, connected via SSH, via a wired connection, to my laptop. I am frustrated with the inability to control, let alone view, these chains.

Hey Rudemutant,
I can see how an advanced set of networking features and reporting info would be helpful for a more experienced user like you. As you have found through firsthand experience, the Nest and Google WiFi offers a fairly basic set of features in attempt to provide a streamlined experience for the majority of our users. For people looking for more depth, we often suggest that they look into 3rd party network monitoring tools, but we have no official recommendation on what to use for that (though the community often is helpful there).
I will be happy to pass your comments along to our internal teams in the form of a feature request. Aside from me sharing that feedback with our developers, is there anything else I can do for you?
Thanks,
Jeff

Actually it's not about monitoring. I can't ssh into my Google network. I can get out, but not in. Having control of the actual firewall rules and routing rules would be awesome

Nevermind, I'm going to try and toss openwrt on them. Thanks for the replies
