Does Google Mesh support IPoE and DHCP

graemedavies

Currently have Fibrenest Wi-Fi and router which has a really weak signal. Been recommended buying a Google Mesh 2 pack. Fibrenest has stated that any router I buy must " Ensure that the router is IPoE and can connect to DHCP". What do these mean and can I just swap my Fibrenest router for a Google Mesh 2 pack?

Hello @graemedavies

Google WiFi, Nest WiFi, and Nest WiFi Pro all support DHCP as an internet connection method. It looks like "IPoE" mostly refers to this standard method, but for some internet service providers, it may require a DHCP option for authentication. Unfortunately, it's not clear exactly how your ISP is doing authentication. I guess my best summary of this is that is might work perfectly out of the box. But, if they are requiring the router to provide an EAP authentication option in the DHCP request, then it likely won't. I tried to do a little research Fibrenest but couldn't find this particular detail, unfortunately. You might reach out to them and ask about this specific detail. Or maybe just give it a try, but keep the packaging and receipts so you can return it if it doesn't work?

Hi graemdavies,

I just wanted to jump in real fast to see if you saw MichaelP's reply and to see if you still needed some help on this or if you were able to get it sorted out. If you are still needing some help, just let us know and we'll be happy to continue helping.

Thanks,

Hi, thanks for all the info! Spent over an hour on the phone to Google help as I just couldn't get the Mesh routers to connect to my modem. We eventually tried one of the other 2 mesh routers as the parent one and it worked a treat! So, for all you people who have moved into a new build house which has Fibrenest, just buy the 3 pack Google Mesh complete system. It's fully compatible and we now have WiFi throughout the house.

Hi Graeme!

I have also just moved into a Persimmon home and have the nest WiFi (not the pro, the one down from that with 1 router and 1 point/smart speaker)

I activated my FN internet first and then tried to swap the FN router for the Google one. It wouldn't give me internet 😢

Could you let me know how things are connected your end and what settings you've used on the nest router?

Thank you!

Hello Matt_HGR,

I'm sorry to hear you're having an issue with setting up your network. Could you send a screenshot of the message you're getting during setup? We'll wait for your update.

Regards,
Abi

Hi. I, first of all, removed the Fn router from the system. I then plugged in my Google mesh router and followed the prompts via the google home app. That first router uses a temp log in onto the network. Make sure you look for this in your WiFi list. I think you use the google app to scan the Matrix on the underside of the new router then are prompted to put the password next to the matrix in. That was my problem, I didn't put the password from the router in and it took ages to figure it out. Once you have the master connected you use the Google home app to add your other router on the system. Make sure you set it up close to the master router THEN move it to whatever room you want. Hope that helps.

Thanks Graeme, got the Google WiFi set up now but still struggling with internet connectivity.

If I plug into the FN router I get internet, but like you I don't want the FN router.

If I unplug the FN router and go straight into the ONT on the wall, it never gives me internet. Something not right between the Google router and that ONT on the wall.

Did you have to do anything special in your Google WiFi settings to configure it to work?

Hey folks,

@graemedavies, appreciate your helpful response. I'm happy to hear it's all working now.
@Matt_HGR, chiming in to ensure everything is good here. What specific message do you get during setup?

Best,
Abi

Matt, Have you tried setting up the other router in the pack as the parent one? I had to do that. I didn't have to change any other settings. Just make sure you log onto the temp Google WiFi service when the router is switched on. Also, make sure you scan the matrix and enter the WiFi password which are both on the bottom on the router. I forgot to enter the WiFi password and couldn't get away from the blue flashing light on the router. If still stuck, phone the Google help number. I spent an hour on the phone to them and they were excellent.

All sorted thanks for your help Graeme!
In the end it was my ONT for fibrenest. It needed 90 minutes of power off before it would release the FN router and give the Google router a new IP. I was only giving it half hour or so.
All good now.

Thanks again,

Matt
