Forcing 2.4ghz wifi

Hi. Like others who have posted here, it appears Google has removed ability to select 2.4ghz vs 5ghz wifi networks on it's mesh products. My cheap older light and plug products only do 2.4ghz, but I can no longer see a 2.4ghz version of my wifi to connect too. Thus, I can't force my Pixel 6 onto that specific network to manage those lights, etc. Google please fix on next update!

There was never an option to "select 2.4ghz vs 5ghz wifi networks on it's mesh products", it has always been like described here:

It's up to the IoT device manufacturer to create a product and app pairing process to support this standard Wi-Fi feature of combining the SSID for both 2.4ghz and 5ghz.

The issue is usually only the pairing process, if the IoT device has connected to a given SSID it usually handles combined SSID for 2.4ghz and 5ghz fine afterwards.

There exists some workarounds however, for instance:

  • Use an old iOS, iPadOS or Android device that only supports 2.4ghz to set up the IoT device.
  • Buy a cheap access point or repurpose a wireless router or range extender to broadcast a 2.4ghz only SSID. Connect it by ethernet cable to the primary/ main/ master Nest Wifi puck preferably. Add more ethernet ports by using an unmanaged switch if need be ( https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/6274262?hl=en ).
  • Walk far enough from the Nest Wifi puck(s) to make sure your phone connects to the 2.4ghz network, then start setting up your IoT device.
  • Turn off your Nest Wifi network by removing the power. Feed your laptop an internet connection, either by ethernet cable from your modem, or by mobile network tethering + USB. Then use your laptop to host a 2.4ghz only Wi-Fi with the same network name (SSID) and password as your Nest Wifi network. Get your IoT devices connected to it. Remove the Wi-Fi hosted by your laptop, plug in Nest Wifi, and the IoT devices should jump to the Wi-Fi provided by Nest Wifi.

I don't work for Google.
