Google Nest Router Ethernet Port Slowed when Connected to Ethernet Switch

Matt5

Hi everyone,

I am having speed trouble with my Google Nest Ethernet port on the bottom of my Nest Router. With an ethernet cable between my PC and the Nest router, I get the full 180 mbps I pay for from my provider. When I added an unmanaged Ethernet Switch so I could plug in an additional device (PS4), the wired connection speed to my PC was cut in half to ############ mbps. From what I read in a few different places, an Ethernet Switch should not cut down on speed, yet... when I do it the only way possible with Google Nest:

Modem>Google Nest Router> Switch>PC

The speed is cut in half. I was not able to get WIFI with the Ethernet Switch plugged directly into the Modem then the Google Nest Router plugged into the Switch along with my other devices.

Google Customer Support told me that this is normal with Ethernet Switches but I am seeing that it shouldn't be the case with everything I read about them.

Does anyone know why this is happening?

Is it a gigabit switch?  If it's a 100mbps switch, that's about half your bandwidth.

Yes it's a gigabit switch. Netgear GS205, if that's helpful. Does 10/100/1000.

Appreciate the thought and any others!

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for checking in. Problem still remains. I ordered a new CAT6 patch cable to replace the one to the switch from the Nest Router to the Switch and see if that helps. It should arrive today. If that doesn't fix it, I'm not sure what else to do.

Hey, Matt5.

Just another quick check in to see if that cable helped out or if you still needed some help here. Hopefully that was the fix!

Thanks.

Gigabit ethernet switch in itself should not cut the speed. Have you tried with different ethernet cables? Sometimes they can be bad, and cause "fallback" to 100mbps.

Could also be problems with managed switches + STP (spanning tree protocol), but that's not the case here (your switch is unmanaged).

I have a Netgear GS108 unmanaged switch and 1/1gbps, around 900mbps up and down in real life.

I don't work for Google.
