Google Nest Wifi Pro weak connection

Patrick87
Community Member

So I just setup my Nest Wifi Pro and 1 of the 3 say weak connection.

My question is are these needing to be closer than the original Nest Wifi? I have setup all 3 in the same exact positions I had my original Nest Wifi installed and those were great connection all of the time.

thanks in advance for your input.

Hello @Patrick87

Since the Nest WiFi Pro mesh interconnect runs in the 6GHz band (rather than the 5GHz band), and that band is subject to different regulatory rules, it is currently running at a lower transmit power than the 5GHz band. However, Google has said an upgrade is coming that will allow them to increase the transmit power in that band. So, in the short term, I would not be surprised if they need to be placed a bit closer to the primary unit. But, hopefully, when the new transmit power feature lands, they can be pushed a bit further out.

@MichaelIP

Where did hear or read that Google has an upgrade coming that will allow them to increase the transmit power in that band?

Hello @mosesg

Here's the detail from Google on the (optional) 6GHz transmit power increase that is in the works: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/12349124?hl=en

Hey folks,

Question about the transit power boost that Michael was talking about. Is that going to be a software update or will I have to Buy brand new google nests? My nest that has weak connection is less than 30 feet away from the one that has good connection. Pretty disappointed about this “upgrade” feels like a downgrade.

Hello @Patrick87

believe the transmit power feature will arrive as a software update.

The main reason for my reply, though, was triggered by something you said: "My nest that has weak connection is less than 30 feet away from the one that has good connection."

This makes it sound like you may have arranged your units in a line with the primary at one end, one secondary in the middle, and another secondary further out from there. That's definitely not ideal. The mesh interconnect (802.11s) uses a "fewest hops" metric to select the next node to send each packet to. Since WiFi will slow way down in order to get packets through to a very distant station, that means your most distant secondary is talking directly to the primary rather than going through an intermediate secondary. The higher transmit power will help this situation, but it's still not optimal. You really want to get the primary unit located more centrally so each secondary can get a strong direct connection (one or two rooms away from the primary). Running a bit of Ethernet to make that happen is probably worth it both in the short term and even after the higher transmit power feature arrives.

If you want to better understand why the "fewest hops" policy is used, remember that the mesh interconnect all runs on one radio, meaning it uses a common channel. Going through an intermediary means transmitting the same data twice on that channel, using twice the channel capacity. For that to be faster than going directly in one hop, the transmit speeds for both of those hops would have to be higher than twice the speed of the single hop. Could that happen in some conditions? Possibly. But, the mesh itself has no way to know what the current transmit speeds are for every hop. So, it uses the simpler hop count metric (leading to the optimal placement having the primary in the center).

I understand what your saying but I had my old setup like this for years and never once had an issue. They were both excellent connection and never had an issue with speed. I have also noticed with this new mesh system when I do a speed test in the app I get less then 400 down my old setup was consistently over 900 down. Connected PC directly to the modem and I was over 900 down so it seems like it was a downgrade all together.

might actually return and go back to old setup.

Hey Patrick87,

My apologies for the late reply. Give these steps a try:

  • If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
  • Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
  • Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
  • Turn off IPv6.
  • Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
  • Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
  • If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network. Take note that this will delete all network data.
  • You can skip any step if you’ve done it already.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,
Abi
