Google Wi-Fi upgrade

Jrmck
Community Member

Hi

can anyone help?

trying to upgrade my router from Google Wi-Fi to nest wi-fi however with no joy.

I have reset my network settings and the home app finds my new nest router however during set up it never manages to connect to the internet, just keeps asking me to check Ethernet cable and then reboot router.

I can then plug back in my old Google Wi-Fi router and go though the set up on that and it connects okay to the internet without me changing anything or rebooting my router.  I am with virgin media.

have managed to upgrade the points okay, the nest router is only thing giving me issues.

any help would be greatly appreciated

Try to add the Nest Wifi router as an additional point to your Google Wifi network. It should be just as adding any other additional point, like described here:

If success, let it update itself and reboot. Then factory reset everything, and try to setup the Nest Wifi router as the main unit.

Could also be that your ISP limits 3rd party router by MAC address. So if the above does not work either, ask your ISP if they have locked the modem to a given MAC address. Maybe the modem has a reset button, could be worth trying that.

Since iOS is mentioned:

See following Google Support guide for "Troubleshoot setup with iOS":
https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/12961504?hl=en

---

Make sure the device used for the setup process with the Google Home app have no VPN enabled/ connected; not any 3rd party product, nor the "Apple iCloud Private Relay" ( https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212614 ).

Make sure the Google Home app has been granted permission for "local network access" ( https://support.google.com/chromecast/answer/7172427?hl=en ).

While connected to the Google Wifi/ Nest Wifi wireless network with your iPhone or iPad and doing work with the Google Home app, make sure following settings is disabled:
• "HTTP Proxy" ( https://www.expressvpn.com/support/troubleshooting/disable-proxy-safari/#ios ).
• "Limit IP Address Tracking".
• "Private IP Address", also known as "MAC randomization" ( https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/security/secb9cb3140c/web ).

When adding additional points: IPv6 on Nest Wifi has caused strange problems lately. One thing to try is to disable IPv6 ( https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/6361450?hl=en ), add new Nest Wifi unit, then leave IPv6 off or enable it again.

---

If nothing of the above works, try from a different iOS, iPadOS or Android device, using the Google Home app with the same Google account, or a Google account that has been granted access to the specific Google Home home ( https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9155535?hl=en ).

I don't work for Google.
