Google WiFi (Gen 1) Throttling Speeds from 500/500 to 100/100 almost daily.

Hi all,

Like the title, says, my 500/500 Fiber Internet is getting throttled by the Google WiFi mesh system to about 100/100 or 90/90 -- all wired connections and wireless connections are affected.

Interestingly, the Home app speed tests all show the correct speeds, usually around 485/490 which is correct. But a speed test with the puck wired directly to my PC is showing the throttled 90/90 or 100/100 speeds.

A network restart (Google WiFi puck restart) initiated through the Home app fixes the problem temporarily. All devices then get the correct speeds, wired and wireless. Unfortunately, a day or max 2 days later, the same thing happens again - throttled speeds down to 100/100. Tried my other router, no issues. Tried directly from the ONT, no issue.

This is not a DNS issue or anything like that, it seems like a strange software issue. What can be done? Is there a fix in place?

Hi MrEvil,

I’m sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused — let's get this sorted out.

Give these steps a try:

  1. Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
  2. Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
  3. Set a custom DNS at 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
  4. Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
  5. If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Mel

I have one Google fiber router in my office ( Model: AC-1304 , Software Ver.:14150.43.81) My office desktop PC is wired into the router. Just like everyone else, every single day my router bogs down BIG TIME, from over 900Mbs up and down all the way to literally under 1 Mbs up and down, and that's on my wired connection. Resetting the router temporarily fixes the problem, sure enough it comes back though. Speed tests through Ookla in an icognito window (no extensions added) is showing the proper speeds meaning my home is receiving the proper speeds, it's the router that is not handling it properly. Clearly a hardware problem going on here with the router and I'm almost certain your last firmware is what broke my router.

I just tried your fix posted with the DNS settings and giving it a full 2 minutes unplugged reset, once again with the hard reset it is working great as expected. I'll report back and see if it stays consistent.

Hi Rebosauce,

Thanks for reaching out and I'm sorry to hear that you're still having an issue with your Google Nest Wifi. We'd like to take a deeper look into this — could you fill out this form and let us know once you're done?

Thanks,
Mel

The forum has been filled out. Hopefully we can get it figured out, the temporary fix that was posted in the forum I tested has failed, although not dropping as bad as it was before... but still dropping 30-40 TIMES  lower than it should be, literally from 950Mbs up and down all the way down to 20-30Mbs up and down. I'm the only one using it and I am hardwired, I can't fathom why a router is designed to throttle a WIRED connection in such a way. Obviously, it's not acting the way it was designed right? Last I checked I thought a router acted as merely a "channel" for wired connections to go through, not hijacking all the Bandwidth when there's no one else using it on the wifi. Works good for a while after a hard reset , but drops down again every time.

Hey Rebosauce,

I wanted to follow up and see if you are still in need of any help. Have you had the chance to try the suggestion above? If yes, how is it?

Thanks,
Mel

Um, perhaps you are a bit mixed up? the last thing you said was to expect an email from your team. Also, as mentioned in my post I have tried all fixes you have mentioned, but the problem came back again, it is present right now.  Instead of getting speeds of over 900Mbs up and down as I should be, the router wont allow more than 30-ishMbs up and down.. a hard reset to the router fixes it for some time.. but its pretty much a daily occurrence at this point.

Hi everyone,

Here are the firmware version numbers for the update that's going out now. So it looks like you have the newest version, adamharlow.

Google Wifi: 14150.376.32
Nest Wifi router: 14150.376.32
Google Wifi (2nd gen): 14150.376.32
Nest Wifi point: 1.56.315675
If you're seeing those numbers on your device software version, then you have the newest release. If you're still on an older version, you should expect to see it soon. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,
Jeff

Still have the same issue throughout. I have been having this issue since months ago and I am still having this issue. I have thought that it was my ISP issue and called them. Turned out to be Google WiFi issue. Hoping that you guys are able to solve this as soon as possible other than changing our router and not having Google Wifi as our router anymore. My firmware version is indeed the same as what you have stated already.

Any updates on the fix for this?

The new firmware did not fix the issue.

I have this firmware version on my Nest Wifi router (1450.376.32). LIke others, its hardwired and was providing me 300/35 until Jan 28, 2023. Since then, it has throttled down to 90/35. Rebooting and unplugging cables has not even temporarily increased the speeds. And I have confirmed my ISP provider is still providing me 300/35 at the source.

This has been happening to me and it's driving me crazy. I'm ready to just replace these

I think we're all just waiting for the upcoming firmware release to see if it fixes the issues.

My devices run at less than 100 mbps but fiber into my home is consistently 890 and above. when will

this be fixed????

Firmware did nothing.  The Tech support is the worst ever.  EVER!!!

The devices are garbage and the support is ever worse.

Spent $300+ and it's within a year and they just give you the run around when you ask for a replacement.  Just own up to the fact that it sucks and either replace it or give people their money back.

What is the latest firmware version?

I am running 14150.376.32 and I am still having this issue.

Is there anyway to force a firmware check/update on these devices?

I have the latest firmware and still running into slow WiFi speeds. Wired LAN is fine but WiFi speeds are still definitely much slower connecting devices thru Google WiFi which are connected to a Xfinity XB-7 router/gateway which is in bridged mode. When not in bridged mode and I turn the WiFi on the XB7 on, I get much faster speeds (2x-3x faster) when devices are connected to the XB7.

I think I'm giving up on these for good.

Will see what the new Nest Pro reviews are like and might go that route though hate to ditch my current route/points but if they're making things worse it doesn't make sense to keep them.

Interesting Googles own promo material compares the original mesh with the new Pro and doesn't even mention the ones this thread's about.  That might be a sign they are giving up on these as well.

I should ask I guess before I go this route, is this issue only with the Nest Mesh or the original Google Mesh too?  If it's both I might want to look at another manufacturer altogether.

I have the original system. I have noticed that if I initiate a speed test (doesn’t even have to complete) it goes away. However, it is every couple of days that I have to do this. I would recommend another solution until this issue is resolved on the google products.

Same issue on new firmware. I've given up on these and have moved on to Xfinity Pods. Another in the long line of Google abandoned products.

Jhonleanmel

Any updates on the fix for this?

Are there any updates on this issue? 6/7 experiencing the same issues

They just don’t perform as advertised.  I tried everything.  Gave up moved on.

Can anyone confirm this is happening on both the original Google Mesh system and the 2nd Google Nest Mesh as well?

I'm just wondering if there's much of a chance the upcoming Google Nest Pro won't have the same problem.

I am also having this same issue. Is a fix still being worked on?

new firmware...same issue.  Whats the next fix Google

ba_baracus

I still notice the same issue after the firmware update, but over the last few days it does not seem to be as common. My speed was being throttled for a day last week and the it seemed to have self-corrected (without me doing a speedtest of reboot of the router). Speeds have been fine for a few days now, but will keep an eye on it.

Also interested in knowing if this impacts the new Google Nest WiFi product product or just the Google Mesh that I have.
