Google home speakers lose connections using Google WiFi pro routers

For months now I've been wrestling with nest speakers that do not connect correctly.  The whole speaker system and Google home is total wreck to use for music.

  • Casting apps such as YouTube music do not see the speaker to cast to.
  • Speakers can lose connection completely and never connect again even after rebooting the speakers themselves.
  • Speakers keep incorrectly identify themselves as on a different network when they are not.
  • The worst offenders seem to be stereo paired speakers.  They also seem to switch between their paired name and their previous single unpaired name in the Google home app.

Rebooting the entire Wi-Fi pro network resolves these problems for a few days. But will always come back and all problems will return.

experiencing the EXACT same behavior with my Sonos gear while using my Nest Wifi Pro setup of 3 nodes. Nest Wifi pro has been quite solid until a few months ago and now I have to reboot Nest Wifi Pro, on average, once a week. Several Sonos speakers will drop off the network and will not come back until I reboot the network itself. Nest Wifi Pro no longer under warranty, so replacement on my dime is all I can do.

Hi there folks,

Thanks for reaching out to our community.

It can be frustrating if your speakers don't seem to have a consistent Wi-Fi connection, but don't worry, let's see what we can do about it.

My first suggestion would be to follow this Mesh test connection guide. By testing your network, you can identify areas or reasons why your Wi-Fi might not be performing as expected, as well as how to improve these results.

Do you have any other routers besides the Nest WiFi Pro? There might be a possibility that these extra routers could affect the performance or cause the speakers to change networks. If you don't have any other routers, just make sure your modem isn't a modem/router combo.

You could also try changing your network's password to rule out any other users that might be connected to the network. Just keep in mind that doing so will mean your currently connected devices will drop out from the network and will need to be connected again.

Let me know how it goes.

Regards,

Angel.

Thanks @aperezdeleon .

It is clear this is a common issue with the Google Wifi Pro.

Regardless of ongoing hardware resets and network re-set ups / device resets and wifi network re-joins, the problem is not fixed.

A quick possible solution that Google might be able to consider is to have the Google Wifi Pro have a reset schedule.  Maybe once or twice a day to re-join all network devices (and cause a new IP address to be issued), or a low IP address lease period to do the same.

Regardless, no I do not have a mesh network at home.  I have bought the Google Wifi Pro as i fell for the advertising.  I am quite disappointed that Google does not issue frequent firmware updates to fix these type of problems.  The last firmware updates (major rev) was many months ago!

This is worded FAR better than I could have mustered through my frustration. I ended up replacing my mesh with TP-Link and for the time being, am very happy. Done with Google WiFi products.

I would love to return the product to the shop and get my $$ back and buy Unifi.  However I threw the box away…. I have already had a terrible experience returning my last Nest Wifi.  It took 6 months to get a replacement…

Shocking this garbage hardware and equally shocking service continues for one of the worlds biggest IT companies.

The mesh network has already been tested and each one is resulting in "great connection" I have 3 Google WiFi pro hubs and no other routers.

And this is not a password problem, why would having users on the network affect my speakers.  I'm the only one casting and no one is interfering.

I had all the same problems again this weekend after 2 full network restarts.

I use SoundCloud to stream music and I'm not sure what's happening but the communication between app and speakers totally breaks.  Music still plays and app says paused or has just frozen.  YouTube music doesn't far much better, the speakers sometimes don't even show up in the cast list, part of a group only plays and disconnecting sometimes fails, with it cutting the connection from the phone but continues to play on the speakers. It's a total mess.

OH MY GOD.

i went and bought a Unifi Cloud Gateway router and Unifi U6+ wireless access point bundle. Set the whole thing up in less than 10 minutes (it had to update firmware).

OH MY GOD.

my google speakers all work flawlessly! No sound as they connect - the music just streams with not a problem!

I honestly cannot remember the last time I had it working as flawlessly like this.

the google wifi pro is going back to the store tomorrow. The google wifi pro is not fit for purpose. I followed all trouble shooting and reset it and devices many many times.

please save yourself frustration and buy something better than this google garbage!

Same issue. My three wifi speakers Sonos, Bose 600, and BluSound keep dropping from network. Spoke to Nest customer care, they only suggest standard troubleshooting steps, which only work for a day. The problem is the hardware is just out of warranty and I am having an expensive paper weight sitting on my table. Google should do something about it.

I switched to TPLink AX55 (AX3000) and it works flawlessly. Wifi speakers never drop.

Never buying another Nest Wifi Product.

What a terrible experience! I also won’t be buying another google wifi product : it’s terrible : they don’t adequately support their products (look alone how infrequent they issue a software update!!) go for something else - I chose Unifi and haven’t had a problem yet!
