Improving Performance of Google Home Devices

kcexn

Does the Nest WiFi have WiFi mesh features that improve the performance of the Google Smart speakers? (Nest Hub, Nest Minis).

I've recently encountered a lot of timeout issues on my smart speakers, and Google support has told me that the lag is being caused by the buffers in my speakers filling up.

I'm currently running my smart speakers on a TP-Link Mesh Network with WiFi 5.

Would the Nest WiFi devices OR WiFi 6 improve device performance?

No, there are no extra features, your google speakers will still use the home app. I’d start with looking at your mesh setup. I take it you’ve enough APs to get a strong enough WiFi signal? Do you have a dedicated backaul?

reason I ask is that I have to run two mesh systems, and because of the thickness of the walls I run 4 nest routers instead of the standard AP because it has a 4x4 Ariel system over the 2x2 Ariel’s in the additional points and google WiFi . I also run an Orbi WiFi6 mesh system in AP mode to run our wifi6 enabled devices.

We only have 2 google speakers which are connected to main google mesh network and have no problems with lag

Hi everyone,

Thanks for visiting the Community.

We appreciate you sharing some insights about your network setup, @Tuzza.

@kcexn, sorry to hear about this. Could you please list down all the speakers that are connected to your network? Also, have you tried performing a complete reset on one of your speakers to compare its performance to the others? Let's try that first so we can further isolate the issue.

Best,

Princess

I don't have many users in my home just my wife and I so I dont have a dedicated backhaul. My home is also only a 2BR so I just have an AP in the living room and I only have one Mesh Point in a second bedroom that acts as a repeater. Signal strength is good and bandwidth is more than good enough for the speakers (around 100Mbps).

Still, my buffers are filling up and I'm getting timeout error messages. Buffers can fill for lots of reasons, I'm just trying to make sure that the network isn't one of them.

i have three speakers connected to the network.

The Nest Hub 2nd Gen and One Nest Mini 2nd Gen are connected to the AP. The other Nest Mini 2nd gen are connected to the mesh point.

I have performed a factory reset on all my devices now and things have improved a bit since. Now it routinely times out the first time I trigger the Google assistant with 'hey Google' after a period of inactivity.

Hi kcexn,

Thanks for responding. I appreciate all the info you've shared as well as the steps done.

There could be settings that needs to be checked on your network. Is there any way that you can try to connect the speakers directly in AP for monitoring purposes? As soon as we have sorted out the behavior of the speakers, from there we can rule out what's causing this to happen.

Let me know if that works for you.

@Azarco I have one speaker and one nest hub directly connected to the AP now.

I've factory reset the devices again since my last update and things still haven't improved.

Hi kcexn,

We appreciate your update. To make sure we cover all our bases, could you try setting up one of your speaker or your Google Nest Hub using a mobile hotspot?

Thanks,

Alex
