Kids are defeating Family Wi-Fi!

OnWhiskey
Community Member

I'm using Family Wi-Fi with Nest Wifi.  My kids (on iOS) have figured out that they can "reset network settings" on their phone, and it will connect with a different (generic) name to the network, and they are no longer subject to the bedtime I have set for their device.  I'm not sure if I need to change the password (gigantic PIA) or if there there is a setting somewhere to allow me to approve any new addition to the network?  Any other thoughts?

The pausing functionality has been broken by design ever since MAC randomization became a thing.

You should probably look at controlling access on a different level, for instance the device itself. With products like:

• Apple screen time: https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/ipad/ipadb15cb886/ipados
• Google Family Link: https://families.google.com/familylink

I don't work for Google.

Hi

Would this be why I'm having trouble pausing my kids two 9th gen ipads using Family Wifi groups in the Nest Wifi controls.

Also is there any planned functionality to add manual websites to filter within the groups?

Kind Regards
Graham

Yup, could be. Check the settings on one of them.

I don't think so. But I have no insight into that. I would not rely on Nest Wifi functionality for this anyways.

Hi OnWhiskey,

@olavrb is right about checking those controls in the WiFi settings. As far as the website filtering goes, as of right now, there isn't any plan to add that to the product. What I can do is pass your feedback along to our internal teams as a feature request. I'll be happy to do that and let them know how it would improve the product for you.

Let us know if you find what you need in those settings and if you have any other questions.

Thanks,

Jeff
