Less than 1/2 Wifi Speed with wired backhaul

mlv555
Community Member

Hi,

Why am I only getting less than half of my internet speed ( approx 850/850) when all of my pucks are wired? The highest speed I have seen on wifi is around 300. The average i around 200/200. My setup is 2 Nest Wifi Routers, and 2 google wifi routers. The Main router is a Nest Router.

I have to tried to google fixes but can't find anything. I have ipv6 disabled. I have toggled cloud.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Marlo

Here is a YouTube Video that explains how a setup should look.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDysA3s1n9E

Follow that, and build it out 1 point at a time. Do speed measurements at each step. I would guess you will run into problems when you plug the Google router in.

I get the 800/800 at each point when I plug directly in. It is setup correctly.  It is just a huge drop via wifi

You should get 800/800 wired, as the device is acting as a wired switch, nothing more. To trouble shoot your problem, power off all the Goole points accept your main Nest router. Do a wireless speed test. This will be your baseline wireless speed between the router and the device. Now add a puck and do the speed test again, next to the router, and by the puck. It is important to realize, that you can have too much wifi coverage, and the devices will interfere with each other.

Oh, I was so hopeful this was it. Same result with just the main Nest Router powered on. 😞

If you have another device to use as a test, it could be your testing device and not the router.

Hi, I tested with iPhone 11, Samsung Galaxy, Macbook and Mac mini. All same results

Hey, not that you want to hear this, but I did some digging, and this seems to be a long standing issue.  Here is a thread that shows what others have tried and things that may have or had not worked for them.

Well, that stinks. Thank you so much for you assistance! Have a great 4th of July!

I faced this issue and have tried a long list if things to try to fix.  After 2 weeks this morning first time I got max speed test results.  The one setting that may have impact this is setting one specific client to 'priority' for 8 hours.

IMO, Nest Wi-Fi firmware is throttling some clients in an effort to preserve bandwidth for other clients.  It's a stupid idea and Google should fix it.

Thanks for the tip. I tried it out and it actually made things worse. 😞

Hey @mlv555 , have you or do you know if anyone has ever run a test after kicking off all the clients from Wi-Fi, only leaving 1 client on and do speedtest, ping or trace route test?

JP

Hi Jarod,

I have tried that. Pausing everything but one brings it to 325/325 so approx 100 better. Still no where near where it should be.

Hi folks,

@kiltguy2112 and jarodpetty, thanks for the help!

@mlv555, thanks for reaching out and I'm sorry to hear that you're having an issue with your Google Wifi. To isolate the issue, could you try connecting a computer to your ISP router and try to do a speed test?

Thanks,

Edward

Hi Edward,

I am giving up on it. I tried a 2 different routers and they are much faster wifi signal (500 & 650). It is definitely an issue with Google wifi. I hope figures it out of the rest of the users but I am switching to ASUS. Thank you.
