Good afternoon,
I have google nest wifi for a few years now and it has worked well. My home-lab has matured over the years to now having a local server managing a NAS, home assistant and other services for the whole house and family.
The kids are getting older and, smarter, now so I want to have more control over what is access from the WAN into my home. I have setup adguard home and it is working great...BUT
I don't want to have to manage individual devices and have to point them to the adguard service. That is unreliable from my end as it could be changed without me knowing. I want to see all the individual devices through adguard and mange them from that. This way I can have some devices bypass adguard altogether.
But setup as is now is all adguard "sees" is the main GNW router passing dns request to adguard. (Of course I have pointed GNW to adguard's lan ip as DNS server.)
I can solve this by making adguard the DHCP server also, but I can't get GNW to relinquish that control. Limiting the pool in GNW to 1 ip and turning on DHCP in adguard. But I think none of the devices are getting connected because they have to go through a point first to get to adguard, but no ip address issued since I limited the pool.
I've seen some suggestion and I have tried them, see above. And will probably try again since I could've made a mistake. But I can't get it to work.
But ultimately I am ready to just take back control of my LAN and ditch GNW if I have too. I want to start with a managed router that I build using OPNsense.
To those with more experience and wisdom:
1. Does anyone know of any solution with current setup? I would like to go managed router.
2. Should I just go managed router and use GNW points as AP's only? Can that be done with the port-LESS versions? What options do I have with the port-LESS GNW points with this type of setup.
3. If I just dump GNW and got opnsense router with an third partyaccess point can my minis(most likely) and points(not sure) still be use to control google home?
Thank you for taking the time and reading. I am sorry if these questions have been ask a thousand times. I have been searching and trying solutions for a couple weeks now.
I may not have been clear with my explanations and I apologize in advance. Please ask any clarifying questions you need.
