Nest WiFi Throttling ISP Speed

kmb55

I have sent several messages regarding this issue via the Google Home app and have yet to get a reply, so thought I'd give this forum a try.

I live in a remote area where internet options are limited, so have a 30 mbps plan with our ISP. The Speedtest results sitting next to the Nest router are around 3 mbps. I realize 30 isn't great these days, but I can barely get anything done with 3. I also have an AppleTV with Speedtest connected directly to the modem that gets the full 30, so the issue is with the Nest WiFi.

I first noticed and reported this issue after a software update last year. Soon after, there was another update that fixed it, but the throttling came back after another update. I've seen other Nest WiFi users report a similar issue on Reddit and other forums, so it seems Google should be aware of it.

Interestingly, if I do a factory reset then I'll get 30 mbps from the Nest router, but that only lasts a couple of days before dropping back to 3 mbps. I would love to get the full 30 without resorting to a factory reset every few days.

This behavior is likely due to the built in QoS functionality. It's not documented or confirmed anywhere, that I've seen at least, but it's likely the cause or related I'd think.

You could try to disable prioritized activities from Google Home -> Wifi -> Settings (icon) -> Preferred activities.

Also, measured speed in mbps is not neccessarily a indication for how well the network performs for what you use it for. Do you experience any problems other than not reaching 30mbps down on speedtests, that you didn't experience earlier?

One more thing. You say your Apple TV is directly connected to your modem. Do you have double NAT? That too could be a problem.

I don't work for Google.

Hi, kmb55.

Sorry for the network speed issues you're experiencing. I'm sure that's been frustrating and confusing to have going on. Let's get this sorted out and your network back to a reliable state.

Thanks to olavrb for his help on this. He brought up something that we should definitely check first, and that's the possible issue of double NAT happening on your network. We have an article that describes what causes double NAT and how to fix it if it applies to your network. You can find that here: https://bit.ly/3k7Hhmv

Check that article and see if it applies to your situation. If so, let's work on fixing it for you. If you are sure we're not seeing that in your case, we can look at other fixes. I look forward to hearing back.

Thanks.

Thanks Jeff and olavrb.

I read the NAT article and don't think it applies to my situation as the ISP device is just a modem, not a modem/router combo. I do have another Nest router in separate part of the property, but I think the networks are far enough apart so that they won't interfere with one another. I unplugged the other router just in case to see if that makes a difference.

I also disabled preferred activities per olavrb's suggestion.

I just completed a factory reset and will monitor the Speedtest results over the next few days.

Thanks.

Hi, everyone.
As we have things working here and we aren't seeing any new activity here recently I'm going to go ahead and close the thread. If you have more to add, feel free to start a new discussion.
Thanks
