Nest Wifi Switch Connection

mdmcca

Hello.  My modem is buried deep in a closet, would prefer not to put my router there.  There is also a switch in that closet that feeds ethernet ports in several parts of the house.

Will the following setup work?

In my closet: switch connected to modem (via ethernet, of course)

In my living room (central in the house): my nest wifi router plugged into the ethernet jack on the wall, and then my TV also connected to that wifi router.

So, that gives me a better location for my router and also allows direct ethernet connection (via the router) for my TV

Move the switch to your living room to, it should be connected the primary/ main Nest Wifi puck LAN port.

Modem -> Long ethernet cable -> Nest Wifi -> Switch.

Else, if that switch feeds other devices in your home:

Modem -> Long ethernet cable to the living room Nest Wifi -> Long ethernet cable back to the closet into the switch -> Other wired devices.

Thank you.  I could move the switch to the living room except there are other ethernet cables that come into my closet - they need to connect to that switch.

Thanks again.  I don't really have a way to get a second long ethernet cable back to the closet.  The ethernets are in the wall.

Will it definitely not work if I do modem <> switch <> router?

Modem -> switch -> router won't work, the primary Nest Wifi puck will act as a router (firewall, NAT, DHCP). Which means devices connected to the switch won't be able to talk to devices connected to Nest Wifi. But that might be your smallest issue, connecting things to a switch behind a modem that is bridged, means devices are connected directly to the internwt, no firewall or NAT in between.

I think the best would be to have the main Nest Wifi router in the closet, then to the switch, then connect another Nest Wifi router by cable in the living room.

If you need more ethernet ports in the living room, add one more unmanaged switch _before_ connecting the 2nd Nest Wifi router.
