PS5 connection

Browndog81

Hi all,

I’m experiencing frequent dropouts and connectivity issues when gaming on my PS5, even when it’s connected via a wired Ethernet cable through my Google Nest WiFi system. Interestingly, when I connect the PS5 via a mobile hotspot, it works perfectly with no interruptions. I also am able to game via my MacBook with absolutely zero issues.

I’ve tried static IPs, port forwarding, and other standard troubleshooting steps, but the issue persists. It seems like the Mesh router itself may be causing instability under gaming traffic.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues with PS5 gaming on Nest WiFi? Are there any recommended workarounds or settings that reliably prevent dropouts?

Thanks in advance!

Hi @Browndog81

It could be an issue with your internet service provider's DNS. Have you tried changing it to something else, such as Cloudflare or Google?

Change your DNS server - Google Nest Help

Cloudflare: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1
Google: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Thanks for the advice. I have tried this and still no luck.

Hi @Browndog81,

Thanks for reaching out to the community! I understand that you have been experiencing some issues with the connection between your PS5 and your Google Nest WiFi system because it is dropping the connection. Thanks for letting me know that you already tried some troubleshooting steps, such as connecting it to a mobile hotspot or using different devices. It is really helpful! Let me help you find a solution.

Also, thanks to @David_K for jumping into this and providing some assistance! Let me take it from here.

Before we move forward, I need some information to provide you with the most accurate steps:

  • Do you use a modem and router combo?
  • Besides using another device, connecting to the hotspot, static IPs, and port forwarding, what other steps did you try?
  • When did the issue start?

Once you fill out this information, I will be more than happy to assist you!

Best regards,

Debora

Hi Debora,

im located in Australia, and the connection is via the NBN box which is FTTP, then through the Google Mesh Router (there’s the main mesh router and 2 other hubs - although even via LAN connection there’s drop outs during gaming).

I have tried solely WiFi connection to the PS5 at various point throughout the house to no avail. I can’t think of anything else to try, hence posting in the community.

I had the odd disconnection from handing on PS5 over the past 12 months or so but in the last 3 months it’s become to the point it’s unplayable. Sessions barely last 10 minutes without drop outs.

I need to reiterate that at no point does the actual PS5 or any other device lose internet connection. When drop outs have occurred, I have immediately run speed tests on the PS5 and speeds are over 400mbps down and 40mbps up. It’s specifically dropping out from servers such as EA servers and Fortnite

Hi @Browndog81

Thanks for the information you provided; it is really helpful. Let's try the next steps:

  • Power cycle the device that can’t connect
  • Power the device off.
    • Wait 30 seconds.
    • Power the device back on.
    • Try to connect to the Wi-Fi network.
  • Perform a 2-minute power cycle
  • Confirm the PS5 device is up to date
  • Change the Wi-Fi network password
    • Open the Google Home app.
    • Tap Favorites.
    • Tap Wi-Fi.
    • Tap Network settings.
    • Enter a new network password. (Click the eye icon to have the password appear in plain text.)
    • Once done, tap Save.

Please try these steps and let me know how it goes!

Best regards,

Debora
