Scheduled network restart

Is there a way to schedule a Nest WiFi network restart?  I know I can use a smart plug and schedule an off/on, but I'd rather use a native method if at all possible.

Hello @nickp001

No, this is not something Google/Nest WiFi supports directly. If this is something you think it should be able to do, then I would suggest using the "Feedback" feature in the Google Home app to let Google know you'd like to see it. Personally, I think I'd rather see them not need to be restarted. My Google WiFi units almost never get restarted – looks like they've been up for around 74 days at this point.

Yep, I totally agree.  I hate that I have to restart my network several times a week.  Unfortunately, my access points connections degrade to a weak signal or offline frequently.  The only way to get everything back up to a "Great Connection" is to restart the network.  Like I said, this happens several times a week.  If I restart the network every night while I sleep, I'm hoping that I'll have fewer problems.

Good to know I'm not the only one having that same issue.  It has gotten so bad now that I need to reboot about every 24 hours.  My Wi-Fi connections go from 250-300 Mbps down to under 10 Mbps (or no internet connection all) while standing next to one of the routers.

Hey, nickp001.

Sorry for the issues you're having with your network performance being shaky. I know that's frustrating. As MichaelP mentioned, this isn't currently a feature that's supported to have your network automatically restart. The network performance decrease over time is actually an issue that's being looked into internally and I'm hoping to have news on a fix or workaround soon. I'll share more as I have it.

Thanks

Same issue for me, have to restart my router maybe once a week to keep the network active and ensure devices are recognised/online. Found this thread just now whilst searching for a way to schedule the restarts at 4am or something 😞

Any updates on this? At least let people schedule a reboot. Seems that would be a good interim solution until a more permanent one is found.

Any updates? People are still having the issue 3 months later.

Mine just started about 2 weeks ago and now I reboot my router once every 2 days minimum. No disconnects, just a drop from 300-400 mbps to 10-20 mbps. Reboot? Everything back to normal.

I'd love to have the problem fixed, but a scheduled reboot in the Google Home app would be a decent stop-gap. Thanks.

Hi Jeff, many of us here are having to restart our google wifi points multiple times per week. An update on the status of a fix would be welcome and would go a long way towards buying google some good will from a large and frustrated group of users.

I am experiencing the same issue.  At least once a week network performance of the mesh degrades to require a restart.  Restart has to be done next to the master router as the rest of the mesh is down.

Any news on a fix?

I, too, suffer from needing to restart to get back to good network quality. It just seems to degrade. I experienced this frequently last year and this year it continues.  Every few months I get fed up and start searching again for a way to have it automatically restart my network and access points but to no avail.

I'm fine if you decide on a solution so that isn't needed but here we are in year 2 with no fix.

I urge you to please set yourselves a deadline after which you will simply add an auto-restart feature. Your customers shouldn't have to suffer while you endlessly search for the solution you prefer (even if it is one that we prefer, too!) if you simply aren't able to deliver on that solution.

In the end, the preferred solution is one that is implemented in a timely manner.

Hi, any update on this? Still facing this issue with multiple drops daily on all wifi points. Thanks

Hi Jeff, are there any updates on the work around or if there is an expected update? Its been 7 months and wifi point quality degrades over 1 to 2 days and i need to perform routine network resets

Im still dealing with the same issue.  My wife wants me to "divorce" Google or I will end up in divorce.  Its not worth the stress anymore.  I might have to go buy a different WIFI system

Yeah wasn't 7t about time this got fixed ? It's an absolute joke the way this has not been addressed yet.

How do you define "soon", as it is still an issue well over a year later.

I gave up waiting. Decommissioned the wifi and installed a TP-Link deco. Rock solid. Now i have glorified google home minis. But at least the wifi works.

Same here AXE5400. OMG its on a WHOLE different level than any Google Mesh I've ever owned. Well all the generations of it any ways have been decommissioned as well

Any update on this? It been over 1.5 years and people still suffer from this bug. How can google take no action on such a serious bug?

Hi, ShellDude.

Just to be sure we're looking at the same thing, you're seeing the network slow down over time until you reset the network manually? Are you mostly seeing speed issues, or is it also with disconnects? Let me know a bit more so we can dive into it.

Thanks.

I'm having the same issue here. I noticed both network slow down and connection drop off. For network slow down, I experienced web page frozen. At that time, when check internet speed test, it reports < 10 MPS. But my service should be much faster. Google Home checks internet speed every night. It reports my internet speed is at 600 MPS for download and 300 MPS for upload daily. I also noticed VPN connection got dropped from time to time. It seems some network reset. For all these issues, I have to manually reboot the Google nest wifi service through Google Home app about once a week. After each reboot, I feel the network connection get clean back for at least a few days. I hope Google could provide an option to schedule a weekly reboot through Google Home app. Thanks

Hey Jeff,

Same here. slow down for end devices.  I find the hibs themselves (in the app, checking connections) still have good internet connection - but links to other hibs go from great to good, and end devices get down to <10Mbps.  Restart google network (not BT/plusnet modem/router) and end device is back to normal.

Thanks for keeping up with this 🙂

I have the same issue.  What I see normally is the google nest device still has a great download and upload speed reported but my device has a terrible on <10 after a period of time of 24-72 hours.  It is like the connection between the device and access point gets over saturated or stale.  It stays open but the connection performance becomes severely degraded over time.

Jeff,

This is a non-stop problem.  I COMPLETELY did a factory reset of the router and nest units.  The problem is just as bad as before.  I have all kinds of hard wired equipment, so I know it is not my ISP.  This problem has to end.  I need  a resolution or I will have to spend the money once again to buy an ASUS or Netgear system.  Please advise.  I am very frustrated.

I'm seeing the same issues, both slowing down over time and intermittent disconnects, both  wifi and cabled connections. The time between the need for a reboot seems to be correlated with the amount of traffic we have. I see an 5-10x reduction in bandwidth using speedtest.net (see results over time) on a 500/500 MBit fiber connection, I'm regularly seeing 100/100 MBit with Speedtest.net across both wifi and cabled connections on every device connected. The interesting part is that Google Home app reports that Google Wifi speed test results are in the 500/500MBit range. So it seems like the problem is on the LAN, not the WAN-side.

hi, I just setup my Google nest, a wifi google point, a Google hub2 and 2 mini speakers around my house.

For my case. The wifi actually disconnects and I couldn't get wifi on my wifi point or hub2 and I will have to restart the Google Nest Router before it works again.

I've not encounter such issue using other router system before. And this happens once every few days.

Please help!

This is the issue with the old router need to reboot daily where i had replaced the router to nest WiFi. One and half year later, nest WiFi having same issue as my previous router. Nest WiFi pro still not available in my country. Time to switch to other brand.

It's both! Speed and disconnects.

I know this is an old post.

However, I started to see these issues this year. I normally get 250 Mbps and today I was getting about 80 Mbps with one person at home. After I restarted my internet download speeds increased back to 250 + Mbps

Every wifi router MFG out there has a built-in settings to auto-program the wifi router to restart which helps clear any cache.

I am using a Pixel 6 Pro, is there anyone out there using a third-party app to do this?

I currently use MacDriod and I have not figured out a way to auto restart the Google wifi. I would like to set it to auto-restart every 3 days.

We all experienced this. Most of us junked our Google Mesh at this point and moved. Some of us are still suffering. And others turned off video conference and saw a jump in speed but still have to reboot daily

Hi, ShellDude.
I just wanted to check in real fast to see if you saw my reply and to find out if you still needed any help on this. If you're still needing assistance, please just let me know and I'll be happy to continue helping.
Thanks.

I have this same persistent issue.  My speed degrades until it is unbearable, and I have to restart the network.  After a restart, it comes up fine with screaming speed for 2-3 days.

Marcus_79

I am also experiencing this issue of speed degradation (quite severe, from ~100Mb/s to 1) and now i'm having to restart the main router every day now. The network has been pretty much flawless until a few weeks ago, so maybe it's due to an upgrade. Point to note, this affects both wired and wireless speeds. Once i unplug the power from the main nest router and restart it, it all comes back to normal.

Another thing to note, is that when it's being affected, i cannot perform any management functions in the home app, it always says cannot connect to network. So I can't restart the network from the app, or run mesh tests (they fail)

My Google Nest wifi points go offline every 2 days. I must cycle the power in them for them to work and reconnect to the network.  Not a great solution.

I have had the same issue others have described. I need to restart the network daily because internet speeds slow to 5mbs (or internet connection even lost sometimes). I would like google to build in the ability to automatically restart network.

Rob1989

Hi Jeff. I found this thread while searching for an automatic restart like many others here. Having the same exact issues. The network constantly goes "offline" and I need to restart it through the Google home app. Is there still no solution for this? I see the thread goes back several months.

i have installed 3 google wifi mesh routers at 3 different locations.    all locations are now seeing the slowdown and disconnect issue.   PLEASE UPDATE with a scheduled reboot option.   Thanks

I’ve installed Tapo smart plug at main router only and scheduled daily reboot one month ago. The problem seem has been solved. I dunno what will happen in the long run.

For me, these issues started about 4 weeks ago.  (Nest WiFi, no additional devices, Xfinity provider)

Chatting with support found 66 errors with my DNS.  Support recommended setting DNS to Custom, then put these on the first and second boxes respectively:
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

I'm now monitoring to see if there is any improvement.

Furmamax3

Did you see any improvement?  Like everyone else I am sick of having to reboot daily.  I have 1G service and frequently drop down to 25M 😞
