Slow wired connections

Morsey
Community Member

Hey community, I have just changed internet provider and moved from FTTC to FTTP.  For some reason, the wireless speeds coming from my nest hub are 250mbps (which I signed up for), yet the wired connections coming directly from the hub are around 90!!!!  I have tested it from the cable coming directly out of the nest hub.  I have tried different cables with no change.  I'm not deeply technical but am good at following instructions :).  Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening????

Hi Morsey,

Thanks for posting—let's get this sorted out. A few questions: how many Google Wifi devices do you have? Have you tried to connect other devices via wired connection (if there’s any) to check if it will give the same speed result? Does a wired connection to your internet modem give the correct speed result?

Alex

Hi Alex, thanks so much for the response.  I have three google wi-fi devices around the home, with one as the router.  I've checked a range of devices from laptops to televisions and all have the same result.  And yes a wired connection diretly to the modem does give the 250mbps (the same as the wireless results).  I really appreciate the fact you're offering to help.  Jonathon

Hi there,

It’s a pleasure to assist you. Additional question: are you getting the same speedtest result for all three Google Wifi devices you have, or only for a specific device? What type of Ethernet cable do you have? Try to use a Cat 5e or Cat 6.

Kind regards,
Alex

Good morning Alex,  I am using Cat6 cables.  I bought brand new ones to ensure this wasnt the problem.  The other two devices are placed on walls throughout the home, are not connected to ethernet, and are only used for the wireless mesh.  Are you suggesting I take one down, make it the router and then check the wired speed?  If so, some instructions on making it the router would be helpful.  Thanks again for helping!

Hello Morsey,

Thanks for the information provided. Let’s run a speedtest to the other Google Wifi mesh points by connecting the Cat 6 cable on the LAN (gray) port. Let’s see if all three Google Wifi devices are giving the same speed via wired connection.

Warmly,
Alex

Hi Alex, so I did as you sugegsted by connecting the ethernet internet connection to another of the google home devices.  Unfortunately the speed remains at 90'ish mbps.  It is directly wired into the television.  Please do let me know what we can do from here.  I have taken some photos of the speed and the connection, but I dont seem to be able to upload them for you to see.  I look forward to your ideas from here and sincerely appreciatwe your help!
