Wifi point ignoring ethernet hard-wire

TC2402

Hi,

I have Google wifi in my house which works fine.  I set up a wifi point in my garden office and, when it connects using the mesh, the signal is very weak and unreliable.

I ran an ethernet cable from my Google wifi in the house down to my office.  When I connect the ethernet cable directly to my laptop in the office, it's blazing fast.  There's nothing wrong with the cable.

When I connect the cable to my Google wifi point in the office, it ignores it and continues to use the mesh.  I go to settings on the point and it shows "Connection: wireless".

I've looked at some other posts and have tried chaning DNS settings, factory resetting the point, ensuring there are no switches between the point and the main Google wifi point next to my router in the house.  Nothing seems to work.

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Hey @TC2402 .

You will need to reset the point you are referring to and add it back. Please follow the below:

  1. Factory reset your Wifi device
  2. Once rebooted, remove the power cord
  3. Connect the Ethernet cable to the point
  4. Plug the power cable back in
  5. Follow the normal set up process

Let me know if this resolves the issue or if you need further assistance.

Thanks Patrick - I tried those steps but once it has completed the set-up process, when I check in settings it shows as "Connection: wireless" still.

Thanks @TC2402 .

Please try the previous steps but remove the point from the Google Home app first, then do a manual reset and the remaining steps.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi @PatrickP_Viking - thanks for the advice.  Here's what's happened.

I couldn't find a way of removing the point from the Google Home app other than doing a factory reset from there.  Was that what you had in mind?

Anyway, I tried that but when I followed the set-up process with the ethernet cable plugged (into the WAN port) it ignored the ethernet cable and added the wifi point to the wireless mesh.

Here's the funny thing.  I then went and unplugged the other wifi points in my house (apart from the main one attached to the router which is out of reach of my back garden).  My intention was to run the set-up again and see if it would set up the wifi point in the garden as wired.  Well, no sooner as I had turned those wifi points off, the garden wifi point was showing as "wired" in its settings and was working as planned.

So I thought I had solved it.

Here's the kicker - I do need those other wifi points.  When I switched them back on, the wifi point in the garden switched back to wireless/ mesh.

It seems that the wifi point prioritises connecting wirelessly over connecting using the ethernet connection.

Is there any way to alter its settings to change that prioritisation?

Hi, @TC2402,

Thank you so much for your response. I’m glad to know your mail inconvenience was resolved. I’m happy to help you with your concern.

Regarding your questions, yes, you can prioritize the Ethernet connections over wirelessly. Here are the steps:

  • Open the Google Home app.
  • Select Favorites > WiFi.
  • Select Devices, then choose the device you want to prioritize.
  • Select Prioritize device.
  • At the bottom menu, choose the length of time you want to prioritize the device.
  • Select Save.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Ana

Hey @luciaaa .

@TC2402 was referring to prioritizing wireless connection versus wired between points. I was working on a response when you replied.

Hey @TC2402 ; apologizes for the delay in responding.

I had the exact same issue in the past. The problem appears to be that something isn't fully clearing on that point on resets.

Just to verify...are you connecting the Ethernet cable to the garden point and the main point/router or to the office point? It should be connected to the main point/router.

If the above checks out, here's a few things to try to keep from having to fully reset everything:

Swap points:

  1. Disconnect the office and garden points and all cables
  2. Place the garden point in the office, power it up, and add to the network if needed
  3. Remove the office point from the Google Home app: Remove Google devices from the Google Home app
  4. Perform another reset via the rest button: Factory reset your Wifi device
  5. Connect an Ethernet cable from the main Google Wifi point/router to the rest point
  6. Power up the reset point and add it to the network
  7. Restart the network via the Google Home app

Reset and add back both points:

  1. Perform the steps above with the exception of #2 for both points then add them both back
  2. Make sure to do a network restart via the app once done

Hardwire all points:

  1. Perform steps #3 & #4 under "Swap points"
  2. Remove all cables from the points
  3. Connect an Ethernet cable from the main Google Wifi point/router to the first point
  4. Power on the point and add it to the network. NOTE: Don't exit to check the connection type!!!
  5. Connect an Ethernet cable from the newly added point to the second point
  6. Power on the point and add it to the network. NOTE: Don't exit to check the connection type!!!
  7. Restart the network via the Google Home app

Let me know how it goes.
