Nest Secure is pretty much obsolete now that T-Mobile is shutting 3G

T-Mobile has announced they are killing their 3G network on Jul 1 2022. Since Nest Secure was shipped with a sim card from T-Mobile and had offered a $10/month connectivity option from T-Mobile for the backup cellular connection, I see that the feature has been effectively killed with the 3G network shutting down.

Support seems to have no clue about alternate options and Google's promise to keep the service up and running with no change in experience is no longer valid as well. I guess it's time to look for alternate solutions for home safety after Jul 1, 2022 since the cellular backup was a good selling point for the product. Oh well...I'm happy the product last as long as it did. Nest did a brilliant job with the product, making it extremely user friendly and easy on the eyes while providing a good amount of visibility into our home's security when we are at home and away. Was happy to be part of it, and sad to see the final nail to it's coffin 😞

Brad,

Is there any plans to provide an alternate option to keep the backup cellular connection running for existing customers? If not, will Google update documentation indicating that the feature is EOL and you are effectively sun-setting the product/feature.

I honestly do not know. I haven't been provided with an alternative, but I know that your devices will connect to your wifi. I would suggest connecting them to a strong wifi connection.

Best regards,

Brad.

🙂This wouldn't work in the event of a power outage due to storms or other internet disruptions. The intent of the backup cellular service was to ensure that we have access to our security system if there is a malicious actor who intentionally turns down the power or internet service in the house. Quite an easy task (especially the internet) since most providers have their wire box on the outside of the home (power is trickier but you can trip the breaker if you "really" want to).
