Can I update my wifi details without having to individually forget/reinstall every single device?

Hello - hopefully, I'm in the right forum.  I have several Google nest speakers dotted around the house, linked with the Home app.  I need to update my wi-fi details (new router) but do I need to individually 'forget then reinstall' every single device in my home network to make this update?

Unfortunately, Google Nest does not make it easy to update Wi-Fi settings on Google Nest devices. That's why their first recommendation is to set the network name (SSID) and password on your new router/modem to the same values you used on your old router/modem.  (That's what we did when we got a new router/modem last year.). Otherwise, you need to remove each device from the Google Home app (or Google Nest app, if appropriate) and do a factory reset (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/10165378).

This is so frustrating! I wish Google would make this process easier. For ALL other devices you simply go into network settings and update the password. But I have to totally reconfigure my little nest speaker as if I had a brand new product. Every time I update my network password is super frustrating and makes me want to get a different product all together and get rid of my Nest. I can't be the only one. Could someone please plead to Google to fix this?.

Hi Georgiecam,

Thank you for posting in the community. Let's work together for a solution.

Based on the information you are reporting, I would recommend you try the next troubleshooting steps:

Let me know how it goes and keep me posted.

I understand the 10-minute process that I need to go through to update my Wi-Fi password on my Google nest/ Google home.

What I'm saying is that this should be a 10-second process like all other products. Why is it so difficult and why can't Google fix it?

For example, I have a Google Pixel cell phone. To connect to the Wi-Fi or update a password, I simply go into network settings on my phone and type in the new password. The process is completed in under 10 seconds.

With my Google home nest product, it is a laborious and frustrating process. I should be able to go to my Google home app and simply update my Wi-Fi password. It would almost be faster for me to order an Amazon Alexis speaker than it is for me to change the password on my Google nest.

Kevin, with all due respect, you've just suggested that I try the annoying process that I'm looking for an alternative to.  I like MplsCustomer's answer - seems like a good solution.

Thanks MplsCustomer for the info, and thank you both for taking the time to respond  🙂
