Advertisements playing, despite being Youtube Premium user.

Uriah
Community Member

Hello, for the past few weeks, Advertisements have begun playing on my Google Home Max, despite being a Youtube Premium user. I'll ask Google to play music on the device or group of living room devices, then after one song it will start playing an Advertisement...

I've confirmed my Google Home app is still set to use YouTube Music service to play from.
I've confirmed my subscription is very much still active, I've been sub'd for years to Google Music which gave me YT Red, which now turned into the YT Premium which Youtube Music uses.

yt
Can you tell me why I'm getting ads on Youtube Music through my nest device now? It's this how the paid service works or is something misconfigured?

Hey folks,

My apologies for the lack of updates on this. Quite a few of you have been having troubles getting advertisements on Premium YouTube Music accounts when playing music on Google Home/Nest devices. Thank you to everyone who updated this thread with details on what you're experiencing.

To help the team further to look into this, if you could send feedback from your Google Home/Nest device using the keywords, "GHT3 Getting Ads when playing YouTube music on <ei. Nest Hub Max>" that would be great. Within your feedback report, feel free to detail what's been happening, your location and the firmware version of your device. For instructions on how to send feedback, check this out.

I know some of you already provided the information above within the forum post and this will be shared with the team, but having this information included in the fresh feedback sent from your device is very important.

I'll hop back on this thread once I have some more details to share.

Cheers,

Muddi

Hey folks,

No new updates to share for now but rest assured that the team is looking into this issue at hand. For those users who haven't send feedback, please do so by follow the steps below:

1. Turn on device usage data and crash reports:

  1. Open the Google Home app
  2. Select the speaker/display device card
  3. At the top-right, select Settings and then Recognition and sharing.
  4. Turn on Send [device model] device usage and crash reports to Google. (Example: Send Google Home device usage and crash reports to Google.)

Note: For iOS devices, turn on Send device usage and crash reports.

2. Reproduce the issue (play YouTube music) then after the issue occurred, immediately send feedback from the Nest Hub Max device by saying "OK Google, send feedback" then say the feedback keyword "GHT3 Getting Ads when playing YouTube music on <ei. Nest Hub Max>"

Let me know once they're done.

Cheers,

Muddi

Muddi, I just submitted feedback about this issue. We're getting it on all our nest hubs, regular and max.

I've just sent feedback via nest hub max for this issue as you've stated. However the screen shot it captured doesn't show the ad that was playing at the time I did it, instead it shows the next song that was queued to play.

Things to note:

1. this only started for me today, it plays an ad after every song, each ad is different but they are all advertising KFC

2. All my devices are signed into my paid account

3. My wife requested "Hey Google, okay cafe music"

4. My wife's voice is recognised on this device.

5. As a thought, ad she is recognised on this device does Google automatically use the free service as I'm the one that has the paid service associated to my voice, while she had her own free account that is never used.

5. If #4 is true then stop it Google. I pay enough each month in sub fees as well as initial costs of all my Google devices, the the very rare time my wife uses Google her voice should be included in my account. If this isn't the case then very carry on, nothing here to see 🙂

Glad I found this thread, we're experiencing the same issues with our Nest Hub. I'll send an error report through the device when it happens next.

Welcome to the unfortunate club...you'll find that google engineers are interested sort of

I just found this thread as I am experiencing the same issue. I just submitted feedback. My Google Home is set up to YouTube premium, yet Google home tells me I cannot chew songs, that is only allowed with YouTube premium. Which I have.

2 years in and this is still happening. There’s no way the team is actively working on it. Please fix the issue or provide an update as to when it will be fixed. Folks using Google home for music are paying premium prices for a service they’re not receiving.

This has been a bug, forcing advertising on customers who should not be receiving them
This has been going on for more than six months now
I'm sure Google are getting paid for this forced advertising, and have not incentive to 'fix the problem' as the six months of no progress illustrates

Hi Muddi, our nest hub 2 is doing this too.  Signed in to YouTube premium but the next still plays ads every time we ask for music or a video.  I can see the issue has been open a long time and people have sent the data you asked for.  What's the solution?  It's not really acceptable to let this carry on, we have invested in the Google ecosystem and the service is not being provided as advertised.

Google Assistant will not connect to fully paid You Tube Premium account. The Ccount is my default music service. All recommendations have been followed. Music will cast but assistant won't play on speaker.

Problem still persists after more than one year and Google just doesn't care at all....

its ridiculous.

Hello everyone,

@ShadowWulf, @MusterBuster, @antstyl, that certainly hasn't been easy for you ― are the ads happening on all your Google Nest speakers or are they happening on specific devices? What devices are those and on what music platform? What troubleshooting steps have you all done?

Let's work this out together.

Regards,

Dan

All speakers, Nest Mini and Nest Hub.

I'm using YouTube Music with YouTube Premium.

I've done everything recommended so far in this thread, including a full factory reset, unlinking and relinking my account and even changing the langauge.

Its not only frustrating but its also ridiculous to my point of you after so many complaints from so many users in so many threads with EXACT same issue!

Having youtube premium and I have ads every after every single song in Youtube music but this happens ONLY when casting to Google mini speaker. When playing music from youtube music to my phone no ads...

Gosh how disappointing that this is a big long thread. I thought it was just me!

I have had this problem on and off for a few months. but now it's happening regularly on more than one google device in my home.

Casting to a device works AOK, asking the Google assistant to play = ADS.

This is very frustrating!

  • What kind of ads are you getting?
    "upgrade to youtube music premium
  • Is it only when you play music or is it videos as well?
Just music, I don't play videos with my devices

I have factory reset my devices in the past and it has resolved for a while.
I have made sure that each of my family members are up to date and that their voice is matched.

HI folks,

Thanks for posting, we would like to gather more details. To further isolate, when you try different music provider like Spotify is the issue the same?

Looking forward for your responses.

Thanks,

Juni

Juni, with respect, I am not paying for Spotify Premium in order to debug your product.

Haha spot on there mate! Honestly what the … do they think they are doing??? We’re paying a premium for ad free content and they are treating us like we’re part of a product testing group lol.

There is plenty of information in the 242 other messages in this thread. No, this does not happen with Spotify or Apple Music. The only service that it happens with is YouTube Music.

I cancelled YouTube Premium and went to Deezer. No problems with Deezer.

Just to jump in here, I am also having this issue as of tonight. Ads for services as well as to upgrade to YouTube Premium. I also have been a Red/Premium subscriber for many years. Happened when using voice commands to play music from my default service, YouTube Music. It's disheartening to come here to find that this issue has persisted for a year now with no resolution. Knowing that Premium is increasing from $14.99 to $22.99 in April, it's a no brainer that I will be changing services. It is really not acceptable for this issue to persist for this long without a resolution.

Hey antstyl,

I'm happy to hear that your issue was resolved!

@partrip: What country are you located in? Also, what is the firmware version of your Google Home/Nest device?

Cheers,

For me, it has been resolved the last 3-4 days. Nothing special done from my side.

Today the ads came back. I truly have no idea why and it's a shame Google has done nothing to fix the issue. In my case, whenever I request the speaker to stream music to the TV I get loads of ads. I guess the solution is going to be try and sell my google assistant devices and switch to Alexa.

Very disappointed my kids watch you tube premium on Google hubs and these ads really interfere and upset them. I am premium user please fix this

I just started experiencing this a couple of days ago. At first, I just thought it was something with the voice command, but I just confirmed that it's also an issue casting YouTube Music Premium. I also don't have this issue listening to YouTube Music Premium on other devices. It is only my Home Speakers (Google, Nest, Lenovo) that is the problem. It's certainly a Google Home/Nest issue.

Bladerunner85

I’m also having this issue now. I had cancelled premium a month ago and resubscribed but now my speaker devices won’t recognize my subscription. The google home devices with a screen do, but the mini’s play commercials, I can’t cast to them, and they won’t play on a speaker group with the screens.

Ewkabod

This just started happening for our nest speakers. Never a problem before. The accounts associated with the speakers have a premium subscription. Ridiculous.

MrD

I have a routine set to play a specific song on YT music to wake me up. Now, what I get first thing in the morning is an AD! I have premium and it is linked. No ads when casting or voice prompt.

denlekke

same problem, really annoying

Skitzoid

Still happening for me, on a JBL Link View, but only on that speaker. Seems like it's an issue with voice recognition from what I can tell. The YouTube music premium account should be attached to the device, but instead it only attaches to an account linked to a voice. If Google doesn't recognize the voice associated with your account, then it plays ads. This is a critical oversight withholding the expected experience of a YouTube premium subscriber.

Kickboxer26

I'm having the same issue, it shouldn't be this complicated.

CraigMack77

This is really frustrating! I just started experiencing this in the last 2 days. There is obviously some update that was pushed to Google Home devices that has broken Premium subscription detection. All of my Home Mini devices play ads recommending subscribing to YouTube Premium in between each song. This happens whether I cast from my phone to the Home device, or if we cast directly from the device using the "Hey Google" hot phrase.

Google... Please fix this!!

Bonezz

Same issue for me.

Ads only happen when casting to speakers, Not happening when listening locally on a computer or phone.

Logged out and logged in out of my accounts, and factory reset the speakers. delete the "home" and recreated everything from scratch. same freaking issue.

seeing that this post was reported by Uriah more than a year ago and its still going has me very disappointed in google.  Contacted support they are "escalating"  😕

I wanted to say that my speakers have stopped playing adds and I can now cast to my devices. My issue started when I cancelled YouTube Preimum for a few weeks then added it back. After adding it back my YouTube App and YouTube Music App both showed that premium was active but my devices were playing ads. Not sure what I did to fix it, but I removed the "non-premium" family members and then added them back to the family plan; I can't say for sure that's what fixed it, but later that day the issue was fixed.

I have a (what was Google play music account) youtube music account for years now.

-1 home max, 1 hub, 4 google homes, 1 max speaker in the garage, a 2TB google one account, 4 nest cameras, 4 nest thermostats, and a personal account... just recently ads have started to play, and the speakers are acting oddly...broken music, unable to play an album, broken sound machine at night... loud ads...NO, NO, NO! I have integrated Google into my life, and I pay for the convience of not being bombarded by ads....something has happened at Google, or Nest, or Youtube music that is causing a systemic problem. This is a serious issue, and new to my part of the world (Canada). Get this solved, it is a huge pain in thr @Ss

Quickmawz

I just started getting this issue even tho my google home rarely played ads (very short ones when they did before) and now it's just blaring super loud ads every 15 mins. wtf? I'm a paying member, ads were precisely the reason I got the subscription in the first place!

Jaysen
Community Member

Thats a complete nogo, though I seem to be late to the show / issue.

I have a google workspace account (not gmail), but a premium YT Music membership still being active. I receive ads in German langauge now while streaming.

Furthermore I had heared the message of too many devices being used - overlapping sometimes. You go absolute crazy. I am paying to NOT hear or see ads. It drives me away from this service immediatly. This cannot happen.
