Ambient EQ suddenly much too dark on my Nest Hub (1st gen)

Since a couple of days, my Nest Hub's screen is very dim. Its ambient light detection seems wrong: it seems to think the room much darker than it really is, and responding to that by setting the display brightness much too low. Sometimes it even switches to the clock, which until a couple of days ago it only did at night, although there's plenty of light around.

If I set the brightness manually, it's fine around 4 or 5, so there's nothing wrong with the display panel itself.

I've tried cleaning the sensor above the screen but that didn't help.

Could this be a firmware issue? Did something mess up the light sensor's calibration?

Same problem here and can't find a solution. It used to be a decent nighttime clock but now it's basically useless. I can't see it and there doesn't seem to be any way to turn off the dimming feature that kicks in when it is idle and switches to the clock Screensaver.

This is stupidly frustrating.

Exact same problem here 😐 It it started suddenly from one day to another.

I've tried to turn on/off automatic brightness but it didn't help 😐

Mine is not that dark that is showing only watch (as in complete dark room) but it's quite dark in normal light conditions so it's barely to see the content.

It's been a while but I think in my case, adjusting the "Auto-brightness offset" fixed it. It's in the Home app in the settings for your Nest hub, under "Display".

If you're still having trouble with the Ambient EQ on your Nest Hub , please give these steps a try:

  • Check if Ambient EQ is turned on
  • Confirm that the light sensor is not obstructed.
  • Ensure that the light sensor is clean.
  • Reboot the device.
  • Factory reset the device.
