There is a thin (2 pixel) line on the edge of the screen that seems to be working but most of the screen is black with green horizontal lines across the screen. We can give commands and the speakers work, just can’t see anything.

A few questions: when did the behavior start? Was the device dropped or knocked over? Also, what troubleshooting steps have you taken so far?
Try the factory reset; this erases all your personalized settings and restores the factory default settings. It won’t automatically reconnect to WI-Fi, and you’ll need to set it up again. Check out the article below to know more about it.
