Good morning routine not starting

333tmh
Community Member

For almost a year now, my good morning routine is not starting after dismissing my alarm or at a specific time on my nest hub display Gen 2. The routine only executes on verbal command after activating the Google Assistant.

I've noticed several postings of the same issue but these threads seem to close before somebody's able to come up with the solution or provide additional information as to why this may be occurring.

I have also utilized the feedback process provided within the Google Home app. But I've yet to receive any emails for additional information directly from Google. I am also unable to locate a resource online that specifically addresses this issue.

So I'm reaching out to the community to see if other people have found a potential solution.

All routines that use a verbal command through the Google Assistant, execute properly, including the good morning routine. Also, except for the good morning routine, any routines created to execute at a specific time execute properly.

I only seem to be having problem with the good morning routine executing at a specific time or upon dismissing my alarm specifically on my Google nest hub Gen 2.

I'm simply baffled. This used to work flawlessly almost a year ago. Sometime within the last eight or so months something changed and I can't seem to figure it out on my own.

Any help from the community is extremely appreciated.

I'm happy to report that, on my Nest Hub display, my 'good morning routine' is working properly when dismissing an alarm on my display. However, I cannot specifically determine not only why or how it stopped, but also why or how it is working properly. I guess I'm simply happy it's just working. Here is my setup:

Nest Hub display: I have both the Sunrise alarm and Morning routine enabled. I toggled the Sunrise alarm on/off over multiple test attempts, and this did not seem to adversely affect whether or not the good morning routine plays.

Google Home app: In my Good morning routine, I've added "When an alarm is dismissed" and specifically added my "Bedroom Display" of the device on which an alarm is dismissed. I have also toggled on, "Get notified on your phone when this routine starts" but in all of my tests, I was never notified, and I am still not notified on my phone, when this routine plays.

In the Google Home app, and on the "Good Morning" routine page, I've tried all starters (At a specific time, At sunrise or sunset, When an alarm is dismissed), and I still cannot find a combination that I could reliably say would allow the Good Morning routine to play 100% of the time, after dismissing my alarm on my Nest Hub display. I remain baffled because this has worked flawlessly in the past.

In a few tests, I even removed the starter "When alarm is dismissed...on my Bedroom Display," and my Nest Hub display still played my Good Morning routine.

Final thoughts. I turned on/off all settings, created new alarms, tried this, tried that. And maybe hitting a bunch buttons/toggles caused this to work. IDK, ridiculous if you ask me. But the setup I have above has worked for 5 consecutive mornings. My lights come up gradually, I get the weather, and my morning music plays. I'm fearful of the next update that comes to my Pixel, Nest Hub, or whatever Google service needs updated, but this is working for me now.

I just bought the thing, and have similar problem. Morning routine would tell the time and than go silent ( I'm using the sunrise as the starter). Also, the workday, every action is only telling the time, than goes silent. 99% of routine initiated by voice command work fine.

Honestly I'm a little disappointed about the performance of the nest hub. And very frustrated

TL;DR: I removed all starters in the Google Home app for my "Good morning" routine. I left the "Morning routine," in Nest Hub display alarm setting, enabled. This seemed to magically make my morning routine play again, but play no matter if I dismiss OR snooze my alarm. Still so very odd.

---

Your use of sunrise as a starter triggered some thoughts. I do not use sunrise as a starter, but I do have "Sunrise alarm" enabled on the Nest Hub display, with the "Morning routine" to play after Nest Hub alarm is dismissed.

On my Nest Hub display: I turned off the "Sunrise alarm" option, while leaving the "Morning routine" option on.

In my google Home app: I removed all starters except the "When I say to my Assistnat..." option, which I believe is required. I set a test alarm, and the "Morning routine" played after I dismissed the test alarm on my Nest Hub. I couldn't believe it. I ran another test, re-enabling the "Sunrise alarm" option on the Nest Hub. It worked again. Then I ran another test by adding a starter, in the Google Home App, "When an alarm is dismissed...on my Nest Hub display" option. It worked again. I ran a final test by turning off the "Morning routine" on my display, and as expected the Morning routine did not execute when dismissing my alarm, even though it was still listed as a starter in my Google Home app.

My final setup last night was to enable Morning routine directly in the alarm setting on my display. And in the home app, for my Good Morning routine, I added a starter "When an alarm is dismissed...on my Nest Hub display". I'm happy to say that my morning routine played this morning, with one minor flaw. I didn't 'dismiss' my alarm, I 'snoozed' it, and it still played my morning routine immediately. I guess I'll take what I can get.

I think this highlights some issue between the Home app communicating the starter setting properly to the Nest Hub display and perhaps all Home/Nest hardware. This was such a wonky process for me, that I have no faith that this is a permanent fix. Or maybe my discovery of this actually working again is a result of an update not known by me. I hope some part of this helps.

Same here, seeing over at Reddit that it is a wide spread problem and no fix for the past few days. I contacted Google and one of the reps said they were aware of the issue. I also filed about a dozen feedbacks through the app as well.

Same. Been working fine for 4 plus yrs. Started about a week ago. Tried unchecking and rechecking the box "start good morning routine after dismissing alarm." Didn't work. A few weeks ago, I had to turn off home and away for my nest thermostat, which had also been working fine for years. It was randomly switching to away even though I hadn't been out of the house for a few days. Nest has also randomly started switching to heat/cool mode instead of eco mode, which is 64f on the bottom end instead of the 66f that I set on eco mode. It's too cold in winter for heat to come on only at 64f. Wouldn't even mind that so much if I could change the temps in heat/cool, but they're fixed in the app. Everything else in google home is working; lights and nest doorbell. Haven't checked other routines, but "good morning" is working fine with verbal command so I'm thinking since the others are only activated with verbal, they'll work. It's really annoying.

I found a way around to make the routines work, for the ones that should start alone, is to make only one action per time.

Like at 8:00, tell the time. At 8:01, play radio.

(But this works better in the workday, as you can create more actions in one routine). I can't create a routine with multiple starting time.

Issue (with multiple actions) should have been fixed. Mine are now "working" since the weekend, sorry your routines aren't yet.

My morning routine is now working again (for now anyway), I wonder if this has anything to do what you are referring to as being fixed now.

Hi folks,

@333tmh, @Anonymous, glad to know this has reached its resolution. Thanks for sharing it in the Community.

@Andrei28, @Wanglese, @LS, we'll keep this thread open for a few more days and let us know if you notice any changes, especially the resolution. If the issue persists, it would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot first:

  1. Unplug the power cord of your router, followed by your Nest speakers.
  2. Plug them back in after 3 minutes.
  3. Restarting your phone might also help.

Check the routines and let me know how it goes.

Cheers,

Dan

Thanks Dan. I'm sorry to say that my issue was resolved temporarily. My Good morning routine only executed once.

I'm still testing a few more configurations. It's so odd that it worked just once. I'm happy to share my success or failure here.

Thanks for leaving this thread open for a few more days.

Same issue. Obviously Google have done something that screws it all up.

think I found an easy solution. Under my bedtime routine, I had "ask what time alarm should be set" then a screen with a tick box for "run good morning routine after alarm is dismissed." I unchecked the box, then I set up a completely separate alarm routine, and added the actions that are in my good morning routine. The alarm routine let's you select what speaker you use and you can set between certain hours, or leave that out and it will show the speaker you selected and anytime. This morning after I dismissed the alarm. The separate alarm routine kicked in right away, and I got my morning routine actions. I've tested it a few times and it's worked every time.  Annoying that after working flawlessly for 4+ years, you need a work around.
