Google Assistant not responding on Home Mini & Hub

When I ask assistant to do regular tasks that have worked flawlessly in the past, there is now the same glitch happening on every speaker in the house (4 Home Mini devices and Nest Hub), where it will freeze for approximately 10-15 seconds, respond with the standard “There was a glitch”, or “Something went wrong, try again in a few seconds”, to which I can immediately ask the same command again and it will work. I can also ask other commands soon thereafter and it will work, but only on the same device, and only for about 30-45 seconds before it reverts to the glitch issue. This has been happening for about 3 weeks now, and I know others who have had the same issues, but no solution can be found. The app on my iPhone works fine, Chromecast devices have no issues, only voice activated Google assistant commands are flawed. This error happens when anybody in the house tries to use it as well, not just me. Thanks in advance for any help and advice!!

It's been a long week... This entire system had been running flawlessly for 3 years up until this point, so moving them around was not of any concern, connections were totally fine.

1st step: Reboot EVERYTHING.. Modem, router, 5 Home Mini's, 1 Nest Hub, 4 Chromecasts, the entire house went off line for 3 hours. Slowly turned everything back on, and the same issue persisted almost immediately.

2nd step: Factory reset the router. It lost all settings, but I restored the same network name and password. Same issue. So now I know the blame lies on some device on the network, somewhere, because since this Google issue started, ALL network speed was slow, phones, streaming, games, even wired PC connections were sub-par for my gig speed fiber connection.

3rd Step: Factory reset the router. Again. With a new network name and password this time. After literally a full day of reconnecting devices, everything works fine, and I'm passing a speed test on any device with flying colors.

Lesson: compromised bandwidth leakage from an unassociated device can lead to this issue.

Side note: the 'glitch' shows on My Activity as "Used Assistant" immediately before "Said turn on the bedroom lights", so it shows it first request tried to register, but errored out.

Hey Princess, thanks for replying. The issue is resolved now, I just had to change my entire wireless network. 😄 It was a non-Google device hemorrhaging bandwidth causing connecting issues with everything.

Hey BlueNeoStang,

Thanks for sharing details about the issue. Sorry to hear that you're having issues with your Google Home Mini and Nest Hub devices - let's dig deeper into this.

A few questions:

  • How far are your devices from the router?
  • How far are the devices from each other?
  • Have you checked "My Activity" to see if your device understands your command?
  • What is the current firmware version of your devices?

Let's try these troubleshooting steps below:

  1. Move your Home Mini and Nest Hub within 15-20 ft. away from the router to get enough signal from your network.
  2. Reboot your speakers and router by disconnecting them from the power source and leave them unplugged for 1 minute. Once done, plug them back one at a time with intervals.
  3. If it's still the same, please try setting up one of your devices using a mobile hotspot. Please note that you will need two mobile devices for this setup (one will serve as a router and the other to be used to set up your speker). Once done, check if your device will have the same behavior.

Keep us posted.

Cheers,

Muddi
