Google Home App Fails to Configure Nest Mini – Tried Everything

Veryaner

I bought a Google Nest Mini (2nd generation) in Amazon with this description:
"Google Nest Mini - 2nd Gen Smart Speaker, Latin American version with Spanish packaging, compatible with the U.S., automatically adjusts language to the user's local settings."

When I reset it, the device speaks in Japanese. This is not a big issue since it switches to my selected languages (Spanish and English) once configured.

However, I’ve tried setting it up with three different phones (Pixel 8 Pro, an old Samsung, and my wife’s iPhone), and all fail at the last step, showing a setup error. The Google Home app doesn’t provide any other option except to exit, and the help center isn’t useful.

I tried setting it up close to my router (which are Google Nest Pro), performed several resets, but the result is always the same. It’s really frustrating.

The NestMini appears online some minutes and then go offline, but is not really offline, because responds to voice commands and interacts, and for example plays music.

I do not know you and this is the strangest answer that I ever received. Google is this a scam?

Is there any response for this, I search on the community and nobody get a real and straight answer, really annoying.

Hi @Veryaner,

Thank you for posting in the community. I'm sorry to hear about the frustrating experience you've had while trying to set up your Google Nest Mini. And I understand how confusing it is for the setup to fail at the last step on multiple phones. I'm here to help you get this resolved.

The core of the problem seems to be the setup error on multiple phones and the fact that the device appears offline in the Google Home app even though it's still functional. You've already done some great troubleshooting by trying three different phones, performing multiple resets, and placing the device close to your Google Nest Pro router.

To help me understand the issue better, could you please provide some more details?

  • What is the exact error message that you see on the screen when the setup fails?
  • Since you are using a Google Nest Pro router, do you have another available Wi-Fi network with a similar name, such as a guest network or a network with a captive portal?
  • Are you using any VPN or proxy on the phones you are using for the setup?

In the meantime, here are a couple of additional steps you can try:

  • Reboot all devices: Try rebooting your Google Nest Pro router by unplugging it for about one minute. While it is unplugged, also unplug your Nest Mini. Once the router is back online, plug the Nest Mini back in and try the setup process again.
  • Reinstall the Google Home app: On your Pixel 8 Pro, try uninstalling and then reinstalling the Google Home app. This can sometimes clear any cached data that might be causing the setup error.
  • Try using a mobile hotspot: Since you have multiple phones, please try using one of them as a mobile hotspot. You can then use another one of your phones to set up the Nest Mini and connect it to the hotspot. This will help us determine if the issue is with your home network or with the Nest Mini itself.

Please let me know how it goes. I look forward to your response so we can continue to work on a solution together.

Regards,

Kevin

Hi @kcruzgonzalez thanks for your reply, these are the tests that I made so far.

Configured with hotspot no problem in the configuration, no issues, but not so usable because it was a temporary network, I cannot change the network without full reset.

Configured with the Home app from my wife's iphone, no error in configuration, the Mini appears online some time and then goes offline and never goes online again.

My actual status is that despite the initial configuration status, this means error or not, at the end my Mini appears offline.

Do you know if there is a kind of diagnostic that can be made in the Home App or Mini to try to understand? Maybe a firmware problem? Incompatibility issue (remember that talks me in Japanese when I reset it)

Thanks again!

Hi @Veryaner,

Thank you for your follow-up and for providing those test results. The information you provided is very helpful and narrows down the issue significantly.

Since we have already confirmed that the Nest Mini is working with a hotspot and have tried to adjust your network settings, the next step is to escalate your case to our specialized support team. They have more advanced tools to diagnose network-specific issues and can work with you to find a solution.

The team would like to learn more about this situation. When you get a chance, please fill out this form and let us know when you're finished. We'll have someone reach out to you via email from there.

I am confident that they will be able to help you. Thank you for your patience.

Regards,

Kevin

Done!

Thanks.

PS: Any idea how long does it take this?

Everything I red and check end up in the same, complete a form, and follow the some recommendations over and over again. But there is no clear answer to this simple question. Really disappointing!!!! I have the complete google suite stablished, Nest Wifi Pro, Pixel 8, Nest Hub and Nest Mini, so I expected to be really straight forward. No clear log about what's going on.
