Google Home / Google Home 1st gen - slooooow reaction

Matzzzzzzzzzzze

I have six Google Smart Speakers here in the house, four of them are 1st generation (1 Google Home and 3 Google Home Mini).
For a few weeks now, these older devices have become very slow. The hotword recognition "Hey Google" is not the problem here. The device responds immediately. However, it takes a few seconds until the LED circle turns and the action is performed after you speak the command.

E.g. like this:

"okay google" <immediate response, LEDs turn on>.
"turn on the light!" <3-5 seconds no response, then the spinning circle and immediate response>.

So unfortunately these speakers are no longer reasonable to use. I so prefer to go to the light switch than to control the smart home with such a slow response.

With the two newer Google Nest Audios, this problem is not present, the response is always immediate after the voice command.
Do I need to dispose of the old speakers? Is the problem possibly already known and can still be corrected with an update?

Additional Info: It seems that this delay only occurs when sending a command after a long time. All following commands after a short time work quickly.

If the response time during the spinning ring was long, I would have checked the WiFi/Cloud connection - but the delay occurs before the ring spins (and presumably before the Speaker sends the request).

I'm having this exact some problem to a tee. Makes me think the pushed some kind of update recently that messed it up some how.

Thanks for reaching out. I am sorry that your devices are responding slowly. I understand your concern and would be more than happy to help find a solution.

First, could you both share the current firmware your device is on?

Please follow these steps to find your device's firmware version.

Please keep me updated, I appreciate your patience and help!

Thanks for the Support.

All of my old speakers (Google Home and Google Home Mini) have the same firmeware version:

Firmware Version: 264660

Cast-Firmware: 1.56.264660

Hi @Matzzzzzzzzze

Thanks for your reply back! I have some more questions.

  • When you observe this issue, could you immediately file feedback? It will help our team get a better in-depth view of this issue. Here are the steps to sending in feedback.
  • Could you please tell me the brand/make/model of the light bulbs?
  • Are you experiencing slow reactions with your device for all voice commands? For example, asking for the weather or playing audio?

Thanks for your patience, let's get this issue resolved!

Hello @domsom and @Matzzzzzzzzzzze

Thank you for your patience and detailed responses, I appreciate it!

@domsom Could you please tell me which firmware your devices are on as well? Thanks!

Sure: one Mini (1st gen) is on 1.56.264660. I enabled others for the preview program, they are now on 1.56.275994. That's also the version currently on my preview enrolled Google Home device.

Hello Frances,

I got back and was able to do some more testing.

1. I have sent the feedback. Do you need any info to assign it?

2. all lights are connected via the OPENHAB Connector. There are different ESP8266 clients in the background connected via OPENHAP. But there are also exceptions: There are a few Smart Life (Tuya) sockets. But the same effect here as well.

3. yes, definitely! It totally doesn't matter if you switch a device or give another device-independent command, like "set the alarm to 6:30" or "what will be the weather today". There is always the delay before the LED ring turns.

Hello Matzzzzzzzzzzze,

Welcome back! I appreciate your reply.

As it's been a few weeks, I just wanted to check first, is this issue still occurring? Please keep me updated, thanks!

Hello @frances, thank you 🙂 Yes, this issue is still occurring. Its also exacly the same as @domson describes. Every time I repeat the command, it works immediately.

I could reproduce it at any time, I just need to leave the device alone for a few minutes and then give a new command. I can also create a video if necessary.

I am also happy to try other things (e.g. set up the device in a different WiFi access point from a different manufacturer, 5Ghz instead of 2.4Ghz, set up in a different Google Home etc.... ). Just let me know.

Hey all,

Apologies for the late reply. I wanted to check in and see if you are still in need of any help? Please let me know, as I would be happy to assist.

Best regards,
Jake

Hi Jake, there was/is no solution to this problem - it is still the same. It can only be fixed by buying new devices - probably the best solution for Google. I was hoping for a bit more here. Too bad.

Hey folks,

Thanks for visiting the Community.

Since this thread hasn't had activity in a while, we're going to close it to keep content fresh.

We hope you were able to get the help you need but if the issue persists feel free to create a new thread, and provide as many details as possible so that others can lend a hand.

Best regards,

Garrett DS

Hi @frances, any news on this issue? As @Matzzzzzzzzzzze , glad to share insights / videos / experiments if that can be of any help.

I've got the same issue, same firmware version. One additional observation: The issue seems to happen primarily when the device hasn't been used for a while (like 10 minutes). E.g. if I ask for the time, it takes like 5 seconds before the dots start to circle, then I get the answer. I ask the same question again immediately after, and the dots circle without delay.

In the meantime, I have a new soundbar from LG with built-in Assistant - this works great as well as the other new Nest devices. Unfortunately, all the old Google Home devices are still unusable. Also, the interaction between old and new devices doesn't work at all anymore - sometimes multiple devices respond to a request or a device in another room responds.
It doesn't make any sense that way.

So that I can control my house properly again I have now ordered some new Nest Minis. It's a bit sad that you apparently have to dispose of the devices after such a short time, but the daily annoyance about these no longer usable devices is very tiring and I do not think that anything will happen here yet.
