Iβve got an original Google Home device. Lately, when I make a simple request (turn off this light, whatβs the current temperature) I the response audio is frequently choppy or garbled. Streaming audio ends with having to unpower then repower the unit. Are the original versions unable to function with the current software?

This sounds to likely be an internet issue. Since the smart speaker devices do barely any processing onboard, if there are connectivity issues (not just if it doesn't have internet, but more like if the connection it has is spotty, slow - like high latency, unreliable, or slow - like low bandwidth,) than that could easily manifest in the type of buggy, stuttery and garbled mess of a response you mentioned. It sometimes happens to me, and I just deal with it. That being said, it could just be your hardware dieing if your device is really old, the original smart speaker did come out all the way back in 2016 (8 years ago π³) after all. If you cant just live with it, I would toss it and buy a used google home mini for like 20 bucks or something.
Could you please elaborate about the audio streaming issue? Are you saying that you cant seem to end audio casting from your IOS device? Or are you saying that the speaker wont respond to "stop" or "pause" commands when streaming audio to the speaker, or when playing music directly on the speaker, making it so that you have to actually unplug the device to get it to stop playing?
I couldn't find anything stating that the original google home speaker has had it's firmware (hardware-level software) support closed, but I wouldn't be surprised if google just stopped testing new updates on those devices before pushing the same update to all display-less speakers which most likely all run the same firmware on similar hardware. You could also try going to the device settings in the google home app and respond with your firmware version, and while you are there you could also try manually updating your devices firmware if you can figure out how to.

Yes that. And sometimes it simply stops playing. This is in a small area where Speedtest.net shows my bandwidth at 300+ megabits/second download and 25 upload.

Hi folks,
Thanks for your input, Bonk.
Jvincent808, thanks for reaching out and letting us know about your concern. A few questions: what model of Google Nest speaker are we working with? When did it begin on that device? Were there any recent changes made?
Try the factory reset; this erases all your personalized settings and restores the factory default settings. It wonβt automatically reconnect to WI-Fi, and youβll need to set it up again. Check out the article below to know more about it.
Factory reset Google Nest or Home speakers or displays

I would be curious to hear back from you if doing the factory reset helps at all (all your settings and stuff are in the cloud, its not like resetting a phone where you loose everything, you will just have to go through the initial setup again). Also, your router could be treating you speaker quite differently from your phone. ( I have no idea how you would test that though so I guess that was a useless comment)
Another question is, do you have that speaker in any speaker groups? Also, your bandwidth seems to be quite good, but what about ping? You tried restarting your router? That's all I can think of unfortunately. GL, I'll check back here every so often.
