Google Mini, Assistant and Family Link

My kids each have a 1st gen Google Mini in their bedrooms but they no longer recognise their voices so their uses are severely limited. I have followed the instructions online (https://support.google.com/families/answer/9071584?hl=en#zippy=%2Coption-use-the-family-link-app-on-...) to add the devices to their account via Family Link, but the devices do not appear on the list of available devices, making this process impossible. Indeed when I tap on 'Add your child to new devices' nothing happens. They seem to be able to see my 2nd gen Google Nest Mini. Any ideas? Is this an incompatibility issue?

Hey there,

I wanted to follow up and see if you are still in need of any help. Have you had the chance to try the suggestion above? If yes, how is it?

Thanks,

Dan

Hi Jake

Sorry that's not really the problem. The devices both work and both can do simple commands, but they can't be set up to recognise my kids' voices which is necessary for more advanced features (e.g. personalised alerts). The link I posted shows how you should do this but the option to add is just not here.

Any other ideas?

Jon

Hi jon_penguin,

You mentioned that your Nest Mini is being detected during the link while the Google Home Mini’s aren’t, right? Are all devices on the same Wi-Fi network? It would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot first:

  1. Unplug the power cord of your router, followed by your Nest speakers.
  2. Plug them back in after 3 minutes.
  3. Restarting your phone might also help.

Once done, check each device if they’re on the same Wi-Fi frequency, either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz if active. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  3. At the top-right corner, tap Settings > Device information.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Dan
